Eloy Casagrande, Bruno Valverde and Mauricio Weimar won in different categories: metal, revelation and social networks, respectively
Three Brazilian musicians won, in different categories, the vote for the best drummers in the world in 2024 promoted by the American magazine Modern Drummerglobal reference on the subject. The election, carried out by popular vote, is quite traditional — to the point of being in its 46th edition.
Eloy Casagrandecurrent member of the Slipknotwas in contention for the best metal drummer of the year award. The victory came by competing with Mario Duplantier (Gojira), Charlie Benante (Anthrax), Ray Luzier (Korn) and Greyson Nekrutman (Grave). The latter even replaced him in the Brazilian band at the beginning of this year.
In a statement, Casagrande — who won in this same category in 2021 — declared:
“I’m happy to have been named the best metal drummer of 2024 by Modern Drummer magazine. Thank you to everyone who voted for me. I would like you to know that I am not the best. There is no good or bad in music or the arts, but I am lucky to have people who support me and who like what I do. Thank you, Modern Drummer, for the service you provide to the drumming community. Thank you, Slipknot and the maggots, for trusting me. See you all on the road.”

Bruno Valverdemember of the Angra who also recently worked with Smith/Kotzen and Whom Gods Destroywas awarded in the Revelation (Up & Coming) category. He got more votes than Tosh Peterson, Jas Kayser, Shane Hawkins (son of the deceased Taylor Hawkinsfrom Foo Fighters) and Lucy Ritter.
Also in a note, Valverde states:
“Thank you very much to everyone who voted for me and supports my work. It’s not about being better or worse; it’s about building a community of people passionate about drums and, in some way, representing feeling and hope for everyone who looks at you with some admiration. It’s all about the drums… our beloved (and best) instrument, haha. And I feel more than honored to be on the cover of Modern Drummer, which promotes and influences global drumming, as well as being alongside these incredible drummers that I respect so much.”
Mauricio Weimar, in turn, took home the Social Networks trophy. The work on the Instagram profile @mauricio.extremedrums was recognized amidst competition with Raja Meissner, Seth Davis, Joe Lana Jr and CJ Hökdal.
He also spoke out, saying:
“ANOTHER VICTORY! Thank you very much, my friends. Thanks for the huge support. I’m the top vote-getter in the ‘SOCIAL MEDIA’ category of the 2024 Modern Drummer reader poll! Wow, this is surreal! Modern Drummer, thank you very much!”
