Work cited by the vocalist and guitarist, famous for having been part of Sepultura in the 1980s and 1990s, is “almost prophetic” in his opinion
The discography of Max Cavalera has practically 40 years of releases through various projects. Some of them were responsible for changing the perception of metal on a global level.
However, one album in particular seems more relevant in the current context, according to the musician. And it’s not from Gravethe band that took him to stardom, or Soulflyhis main project after the break with the old group in 1996.
In an interview with Sense Music Media (via Blabbermouth), Max discussed various moments in his career. The highest praise was reserved for Point Blank (1994), the only album from his project Nailbomba partnership with Alex Newport leaning towards industrial metal with guest appearances by the guitarist Dino Cazares (Fear Factory) and two colleagues from Sepultura: Andreas Kisser (guitar) and his brother Iggor Cavalera (battery).
Max stated:
“I love that album so much. I think Point Blank By far one of my favorite albums of all time. It was so fun to do it. Of course, we didn’t care about anything. We just wanted to make a brutal, angry record with industrial sounds, samples and riffs.”
The older Cavalera was also incredulous at the fact that the work had completed 30 years of release. To celebrate the date, a series of shows will take place in 2025.
“We are going to play at some festivals in Europe in the summer there. It’s great. I love it. I think it’s one of those albums that it would be a shame not to play live because it’s so good.”
The musician even made a comment related to the series of re-recordings of Sepultura’s first releases — Bestial Devastation, Morbid Visions and Schizophrenia . According to Max, there is not the same need for a new version of Point Blankas the original result is already ideal. However, he feels the material needs to be performed live.
Nailbomb sounds current
The great merit of Point Blankin Max Cavalera’s opinion, is to sound current. For him, it is an “almost prophetic” work.
“The things we were singing about are what’s happening right now in the world, unfortunately. You have things like ’24 Hour Bullshit’ about the media. You have ‘Sick Life’ with the drug problem. You have ‘Guerrillas’ with the war in Ukraine. Until the chorus of ‘Guerrillas’ it’s scary: ‘Far from home, learn to hate, die for the earth, f#cking waste’. I guess this is how these Russian kids must feel now going to Ukraine. It’s a prophetic album that actually sounds more relevant now than when it was released.”
Show in the United States
The Marquee Theatre, located in Tempe, Arizona, was the venue on November 9th for the Max Cavalera Dynasty Showan event that celebrated the Brazilian’s career. Soulfly was the headliner, but fans had the opportunity to see Nailbomb return.
Max was accompanied by his son, Igor Amadeus Cavaleraon guitars, in addition to Johnny Chow (Stone Sour, Fireball Ministry and Cavalera Conspiracy) in bass. The members of the Pig DestroyerTravis Stone (guitar), Alex Cha (sampler) and Adam Jarvis (drums) completed the formation. Alex Newport was unable to participate.
About Nailbomb
Originally conceived by Max and Newport as a manifesto of hatred for the world situation at the time, Nailbomb also featured some illustrious participation. Andreas Kisser and Iggor Cavalera (Sepultura), as well as Dino Cazares (Fear Factory), helped the duo record the album Point Blank.
When it came time to bring the project to the stage, they recruited a top team. Igor reprized his role on drums, this time sharing duties with DH Danger (Dead Kennedys) and Barry C. Schneider (Tribe After Tribe). Evan Seinfeld (Biohazard), Christian Olde Wolbers (Fear Factory) and Michael “Scoot” Dickens (Doom) took charge of the bass. Rhys Fulber (Front Line Assembly, Delerium) played the keyboard and Richie Cavalera (Incite) was responsible for the rhythm guitar. / Collaborated: Pedro Hollanda.
