The Skank singer and guitarist said the ’80s style generation had lost steam when the names he mentioned came along
There is no doubt about the importance of Wrong in Brazilian music. With more than 6 million records sold – excluding pirated ones -, the band formed in 1991 and ended in 2023 is one of the country’s record sellers. And in the opinion of Samuele Rosathis relevance is measured beyond numbers.
For the singer and guitarist, the group he composed together with Enrico Portugal (keyboard), Lelo Zaneti (low) e Haroldo Ferretti (drums) was one of those responsible for the rebirth of Brazilian pop rock in the 90s G1the artist also highlighted two other names who can take this credit in a shared way: Raimundo AND Chico Science and Nação Zumbi.
Initially, speaking only of Skank, Rosa recalled the context of the time by declaring:
“I now have enough distance to say that Skank was responsible for the resurgence of Brazilian pop rock in the ’90s. Anyone who lived there knows that that wave of ’80s rock as ‘the hot thing’ had passed. Pop music he was experiencing a Brazilian Rock hangover, with which the 80s had ended Dr. Silvana and Co., Enemies of the king – which would be better, because it is Paulinho Moscowbut it wasn’t that [coisa]… — and the lambada of Beto Barbosa and axé music, which was born there. Record companies have already turned their noses up at any new pop rock band after 1990.”
According to Samuel, the lack of record company support for rock in the early 1990s led to the emergence of independent ventures. Skank himself released his self-titled debut album in 1992, without belonging to a major label.
“Bands started making independent records, or independent labels. […] Skank was and always has been completely white, without a party, affiliated with any label and self-releasing his own independent album. And it was, whether we like it or not, at least one of the most promising bands that made the industry look at Brazilian pop rock, in addition to the pop rock of the Belorizon scene. Shortly thereafter he arrived Jota Quest AND Duck Fu in Belo Horizonte, afterwards [Wilson] Sidereal AND Tianastasia.”
Skank, Raimundos and Chico Science & Nação Zumbi
In Rosa’s view, the rise of such groups has made other musicians more enthusiastic about rock. Raimundos and Chico Science & Nação Zumbi are also mentioned from here.
“All over Brazil, bands started to emerge with this spirit: ‘look, the record companies are looking at pop rock again and I think the ’90s could be a decade of Brazilian pop rock.’ And so it was. [Fomos] The pioneers, I would say, not entirely alone, but together with Raimundos, Chico Science, that very first wave of the 90s, Skank was, in fact, one of the strongholds of this rebirth of Brazilian pop rock, releasing its first independent album. will later be released on Sony.”
Finally, the frontman also highlights two other great bands that emerged from the resurgence of Brazilian pop rock into the mainstream: Charlie Brown Jr AND Rappa. He says:
“Raimundos went to a label called Banguela, at Warner, which was handled by Titans. Chico Science a [subsidiária] Chaos with us at Sony. I think these three bands, in the early 90s, were very important and dominant, so that we could, once again, have more in the future… then we had Charlie Brown Jr, O Rappa…”
Samuel Rosa and the current phonograph market
In an interview before Rolling Stone BrazilSamuel Rosa shared reflections on Rosehis first solo album. The musician revealed why he chose to release the album in its full, traditional format, rather than spreading it across singles or EPs.
“I’m still not convinced that releasing singles periodically is the best format, the best way to conduct your discography.”
Samuel Rosa also described the idea of releasing one single after another as “anxious”. He stressed that this is not always a request from the artists themselves, but from the management part of the music industry, which seeks immediacy and measures work by numbers. He then stated:
“To be able to highlight the aesthetic standards, the musical values, what you believed in… To be a complete ‘photo album’ of that artist updated at that moment, you need an album. […] It’s difficult to assimilate a song; When you start to understand the song, the guy throws another one and another one.”
On the other hand, he stated that he understands the current situation of the sector and emphasized that the work of artists is more accessible today.
“I come from a different era, where people had a harder time listening to an album. I’m impressed because the last full-length album I released was on Skank almost 10 years ago. Back then, when you released an album, you had more saying “listen to my album”; the person had to buy it, he had no alternative. Now things are more democratic, okay.
