Faith No More: Mike Patton Talks Agoraphobia, Which Stopped Him From Performing Concerts

Mike Patton says the isolation imposed by the pandemic ended up aggravating his situation: ‘I became antisocial’

Mike Pattonlead singer of Faith No More and member of Mr. Bunglespoke for the first time about the mental health issues that led to the bands’ touring schedule being canceled last year. Patton said he was being treated for agoraphobia, an anxiety disorder that generates fear of places and situations that can cause panic.

In an interview with Rolling Stone USAto announce a new album by dead crossanother of his projects, Patton explained what happened in the last year and how the isolation imposed by the pandemic worsened the situation.

“It’s still happening, but I feel better. It’s easy to blame the pandemic. But I’ll be honest, man: at first I thought, ‘This is great. I’ll be able to stay at home and record.”, detailed the musician. “I have a studio at home, so I didn’t see any major problems. Until it hit me and I was completely isolated and almost antisocial, afraid of people.”

Still in the interview, the vocalist said that, despite the band having shown support publicly, some members of the Faith No More were disappointed with the cancellation of shows and with that, the atmosphere between the band would not be ‘in the best conditions’, according to Patton.

A few days before I told the guys, ‘I don’t think I’ll make it’. Somehow my trust was broken. I didn’t want to be in front of people, which is weird because I’ve spent half my life doing it. It was very difficult to explain.

The 54-year-old musician said he was receiving professional support to take care of the problems, and that he already feels much better, but he still does not rule out the possibility of rescheduling the return to the stage again. “I don’t know. We can reschedule things or not. It’s a little confusing and complicated. So if it rolls, it rolls. If we don’t, that’s fine too.”
