Mark Tremonti mentioned a track chosen by the group’s members, but months earlier, he spoke of another song that was the members’ favorite
Most artists have some difficulty choosing their favorite work. Node Creedthis doesn’t seem to be a problem: one song is mentioned by the entire band as the best of their career, according to the guitarist Mark Tremonti.
In conversation with the Classic Rockalso a musician from Alter Bridge and project leader Tremonti revealed that the definitive song of the Creedaccording to the members themselves, is a ballad. It is about “Faceless Man”released in Human Clay (1999), the group’s most successful album.
Regarding her, Mark explained:
It was always the song that we would say, ‘this is our best song’. She has a lot of emotion, especially live. It’s something that really resonates with us as a band.”
At the time, Tremonti narrated an event from rehearsals for the recent meeting of the Creed. The situation involving “Faceless Man” and the vocalist Scott Stapp gives an idea of the impact of the song on the members. The guitarist said:
It’s funny. When we were rehearsing for the tour, Scott sang his heart out at first and then he was like, ‘You know, I’m going to take it easy, I have to rest my voice for the shows.’ So when we play ‘Faceless Man’he was giving it his all! It’s the kind of music that when you play it, it pulls you in.”
Human Clay was the work responsible for placing the Creed at the top. Remembered for singles like “Higher” and “With Arms Wide Open” — which won the Grammy for Best Rock Song in 2001 — the album reached number one on the charts in the United States, Canada, Norway and Denmark. More than 20 million copies have been sold to date.
Change of opinion?
A few months before the interview for the Classic Rock, Mark Tremonti spoke to Ultimate Guitar (via website Igor Miranda) about Creed’s favorite song — however, on that occasion, it wasn’t “Faceless Man”. The guitarist mentioned a track on the album Full Circle (2009), the only album released during the quartet’s first reunion, which took place between 2009 and 2012.
When commenting on possible changes to the setlist for current shows, the musician stated:
Yes, we talked about maybe playing ‘Ode’from the first album. I know a lot of people asked ‘Stand Here With Me’ and ‘Hide’. Our favorite song is ‘Team’from Full Circle. I think this album was not very prestigious. We want people to become familiar with it. So we’ll start playing more tracks from it, and you never know, we’ll probably try to play as much as we can next year, maybe every song we’ve ever recorded.”
Tremonti compared the song to other of his works in Alter Bridge and in the band that bears your surname, in addition to mentioning technical aspects. Mark he said:
Just the mood that it creates, there are some of my favorite guitar moments in that song. The tuning is in open G minor, with which I had many good moments. I wrote the song for ‘Words Darker Than Their Wings’ of Alter Bridge with that tuning, in addition to one that will be on the next album by Tremonti. There are a lot of great chord voicings in this tuning that you wouldn’t necessarily find in any other. I just love her.”
Full Circle far from having the same commercial impact as Human Claybut still achieved good results, such as 2nd place in the United States chart. After the second hiatus, which began after the album’s promotional tour, Creed reunited again in 2023.
