The documentary is scheduled to premiere in January Luiz Melodia – In the heart of Brazil wants to take viewers on a dive into the career of the artist, who passed away in 2017 and was one of the biggest names in Brazilian music, through unpublished and rare archives.

In a scene released exclusively to Estadaowhich you can see above, Luiz Melodia reflects on the “cursed” label he received, among other reasons, for not wanting to limit his sound to a single musical genre.

“Something very confusing started, a crazy conversation, but I never stopped writing down the things I knew or what I wanted, or saying what I wanted. No matter how hard they tried, I never gave up my opinions,” he says in the extract.

Luiz Melodia died in 2017, at the age of 66, due to bone marrow cancer.

Directed by Alessandra Dorgan, Luiz Melodia – In the heart of Brazil will debut on January 16, distributed by Embaúba Filmes. The film has had a positive trajectory on the festival circuit this year: it was recognized at the In-Edit Brasil – Festival Internacional do Documentário Musical as best film and was chosen as best documentary at the Paraty International Film Festival.
