Garotin celebrates 2024 and promises releases for next year

The trio formed in São Gonçalo by friends Anchietx, Cupertino and Leo Guima celebrates success and provides clues to the next steps

The year 2024 has been very fruitful for Brazilian music in general. Some artists, however, stand out. This is the caseThe Garotinitrio made up of cariocas Anchietx, Cover AND Leo Guima. Only this year the group released its first album – The boys of São Gonçalo (2024), collaborated with Caetano Veloso on the single “Our review,” brought home the Latin Grammy for Best Contemporary Pop Album in Portuguese and performed at Multi-show Award.

In conversation with the Rolling Stone Brazil a few days after the award ceremony of Grandmotherthe boys said that “the money hasn’t sunk in yet” and that they needed time to digest the emotions of that night before expressing their feelings about the victory.

“I remember someone on the team asking me ‘How are you?'” he said. Cover. “The first thing that came to my mind to answer was ‘I have to go to São Gonçalo’, I hadn’t yet had time to go back to our city, to my parents’ house.”

It is understandable that returning home helps to put your head back in order. The trio’s career grew rapidly. They met in 2019, released their first songs in 2023, and about a year later they were competing for – and winning – one of the music industry’s biggest awards.

For the group this type of result is more a consequence than an objective. “We make a sound that we don’t think about much in the market,” he explains Lion. “As much as we have the problem of making stops – we have a strong chorus, that grabs people – it all comes from our hearts.”

We didn’t even imagine winning this award, on the contrary. Considering who competed with us, who had a longer career. We didn’t expect it, we really had more hopes for the revelation prize. – Lion

Cover he adds that their idea was to consolidate the foundations so that each person’s solo career could grow alongside that of the band, but everything “is turning out to be much bigger than we thought”. At the shows the audience has everything on the tip of their tongue, be it album tracks, singles or tracks from the EP. The Garotina session (2023), passing through the individual works.

But the passion of the fans goes beyond knowing the lyrics. Anchietx remember tattoos, paintings and clothes as displays of admiration. “Even the gifts that we received, the person who put themselves in that position of ‘I need these kids to know that there are people here with them in the trenches. “And there is hysterical screaming at the show,” he adds Cover. “If we can consider ourselves an idol, it’s a very recent thing. But these guys are really dedicated to this thing.” The Garotini It is important for them to recognize the efforts of their fans, a key part of their success.

It takes courage to dream

It was with this phrase that the trio thanked them for the award. Leo explains that they always had to prove a lot of things and when they started some people didn’t believe that the project would become so relevant.

“Not out of malice,” explains the singer. “It’s because they don’t really have many references for people who are successful in life. The family is afraid that we will pursue a risky career like music. We have a lot to prove.”

If a Lion the award made him think back to those moments, Cover he reveals that the victory took a weight off his shoulders. “We have been involved in this project for a long time. I met the Lion in 2018; in 2019 we know the Anchietx. In other words, we have been experiencing our friendship for a long time before the launch, so a lot of things we have experienced – a lot of difficulties – when we get there, I feel like the burden is off and they let us work with this stop.”

The status of winners of the Grandmother For them it is not synonymous with comfort. On the contrary, after winning, the three feel motivated and are already working on new projects while planning their next steps.

Before the awards ceremony, they were excited to perform at the event. “I’m really excited about our presentation,” he said. The musician praises the references of fox and emphasizes that their friendship was essential to the success of the partnership between the four. “When we hear a sound from five, six years ago YOUwe ask ourselves ‘who produced this? We need this guy,” he recalls Lion.

The guys classify the producer as an excellent instrumentalist and a deep connoisseur of music, especially soul, R&B and MPB music. “Our composition already mixes the three, our friendship, the energy of the songs, the parts of the songs. This is already a mixture and it had to continue with all coherence in the musical production; there was no better producer in Brazil than fox. He’s my favorite producer,” he says Cover.

The anti-formula for success

The originality of the trio’s sound is certainly one of the most interesting aspects. The success that happens without the standardization of a sector that is increasingly skilled in the formulas for becoming successes. While large-scale, pasteurized songs appear – and become saturated – in droves, artists who swim against this current stand out.

“In times of great artistic planning, an album is born with all the simplicity of the moment of its creation,” he reflects Cover on what, today, is an element of differentiation for music.

The ‘little push’ of weight

Who sees the success ofThe Garotini Nowadays one couldn’t imagine that the trio might not exist if it weren’t for a “little push” from the producer Paula Lavigne and her husband, no less Caetano Veloso.

Born in São Gonçalo, the boys were closely involved in the culture of evenings, a perfect environment to present music, get in touch with new artists and which, among other things, the icon of Tropicália knows very well.

That was it then Lion, Cover AND Anchietx they were invited to an evening which took place at the home of Paul AND Caetano.

“We went and got this energy from the party we had in São Gonçalo and they loved it,” he recalls Cover.

As previously mentioned, the initial plan was to create a stronger foundation to advance each person’s solo career. But Paul he recognized the connection between the three of them and suggested they meet up for a threesome.

His encouragement also included the collaboration of Caetanowho asked to record a song together with the boys. The result was”Our review“, single released in January 2024.

“How can I explain it, one day you sleep at your house, the next Caetano I want to record your song,” he jokes Anchietx.

According to the boys, this gesture, from one of the main artists of Brazilian music, is worth more than any award:

New life to the soul

Leo Guima brings to the group an emphasis on groove, with a vocality that combines consistency and lightness. Anchietx it is he who provides the main suggestions of R&B with a Brazilian flavor, mixing the speed and conversation of rap. Already Cover is responsible for completing the mix with MPB’s musicality in a combination of ingredients masterfully directed by the producer Giulio Raposo.

If 2024 was an extraordinary year for the group, 2025 should not be left behind.
