The second season of Transplant it ended, and the finale ended when Dr. Bishop quit his job to save Bash after some shootings on the negligence suit , leaving viewers in some cliffhangers for Theo, Bash and Mags. Bash’s flashback story also took a big step forward, following his release from his Syrian prison, but there are still many questions about these scenes set in the past. Star Hamza Haq spoke to Gossipify about the show and discussed shooting the flashbacks … including why some needed to be filmed.
Season 2 went even further, establishing why Bash is still so obsessed with the life he left behind in Syria, even as he attempts to rebuild a life in Canada for his sister. The flashbacks were spread over several episodes instead of being broadcast over an hour of television, so when I spoke to Hamza Haq she talked about how these scenes were shot and what made them so effective. The actor said:
We shot most of them on the same day. The thing is, given the artistic visions of the different incoming directors and everything in between, we’ve sometimes done things a little differently. So I think in the course of that, it was probably shot for five days and then re-filmed because sometimes some of the scenes were too horrible and the network would say, “Hey, can we tone it down a bit?” Because we haven’t shot a version that wasn’t that shocking. It’s not been too many days, but the hair and makeup, I have to congratulate you. They did a spectacular job, especially in the later prison scenes with the beard and grime. And also the art department. This prison cell they built was in our studio and I think they did a great job.
If it looked like the flashbacks that aired in Season 2 were terrible, then you can only imagine what the originals looked like before the network called for filming! TransplantThe local network for is actually CTV in Canada, which airs the episodes before they reach NBC for audiences in the United States. Flashbacks can be hard to watch for Bash’s sake, with the implication of what wasn’t explicitly shown.
Hamza Haq made sure to give credit to the hair and makeup departments for really creating her character’s gravity look in the final episodes of the season. When asked if the beard and makeup helped him get into character in those scenes, the actor shared:
Absolutely. They do a lot of the work for you. Of course, you have to show up the same day, but the costume always helps. Anyone preparing for an audition has to dress for the role and they’ve done a lot of that work for me. I just had to push a little harder, but if it was a still image, it already tells a lot of stories, so I’m very grateful for their commitment and vision.
Season 2 also revisited Bash’s past with his encounter with Rania, also known as the Mystery Woman. who appeared at the end of the season one finale . At the end of the second season, she wanted to keep Rania in her (and Amira’s) life, but the door seems closed enough for love. Whether this is the case for him and Mags after he shows up on their door in the final moments of the final remains to be seen. The good news is that Transplant not only has it already been renewed for season 3, but it is already in production. When we spoke in early July, Hamza Haq revealed that they were “filming episode 8 and episode 9” of next season and Bash. will have a new series of fights after the end of season 2 .
