Several media outlets erroneously published that Renato Tommaso, who died aged 54, was a member of the band

As published by Rolling Stone Brazil, Renato Tommasolongtime bass technician from Jota Questpassed away at the age of 54. The information was shared by the band on their social networks this Monday morning (30).

As Tommaso’s specific role in the group was not specified in the statement — the lead singer Rogério Flausino defines it as “musician, technician and producer, who has been with us in very special moments over the last 18 years” —, some media outlets reported mistakenly and without due investigation that he would be the band’s bassist. However, this function has been assumed since the beginning by P.J.nickname of Paulo Roberto Diniz Júnior.

For a moment, many internet users were confused, either because they thought that Tommaso was really the bassist for Jota Quest or because they believed that PJ had actually passed away. It was necessary for the band itself to publish a clarification on its networks, confirming Renato’s functions.

“Contrary to what has been erroneously announced by the media, the band JOTA QUEST comes to clarify that we have NOT lost our bassist (PJ), but rather, our great friend Renato Tommaso, PJ’s roadie and technical producer. We once again reinforce our deep feelings to the friends and family of dear Renato, and we thank everyone for the countless messages of support and affection.”

PJ also spoke out via online text. The bassist reproduced a screenshot of one of the vehicles that disseminated the misinformation and criticized what he calls “Brazilian cultural media”. Read below.

“For some time now, everyone has known that Brazilian music criticism and cultural media have been losing all importance, perhaps due to the need for speed in transmitting information (due to the ‘plague’ of social media), the new ‘reporters’ in the cultural area are more for first-time ‘bloggers’ than for a true scholar. I miss the great music reporters like Sérgio Martins, Pedro Alexandre Sanches, among others.
How can a report like that come out? Everyone who follows me knows that the person who passed away was my great friend Renato, who was my bass tech. And a report like that, from an important website, doesn’t even know that I am the bassist of Jota Quest for only 30 years, at this point in the championship! I think this, firstly, is a lack of respect towards Renato, because they didn’t go in depth in investigating the news. And, secondly, because they propagate completely false information.
Guys, let’s study music, let’s listen to music, let’s delve deeper into culture. This is the advice I give to new reporters, new music critics and people who work with culture and art in the country. It’s too difficult. The ignorance is total. This cannot happen under any circumstances.”
