Several media outlets erroneously published that Renato Tommaso, who died at the age of 54, was a member of the band
As published by Rolling Stone Brazil, Renato Tommasolongtime bassist of Jota Questpassed away at the age of 54. The information was shared by the band on their social networks this Monday morning (30).
Since the statement does not specify Tommaso’s specific role in the group: the singer Rogerio Flausino defines it as “musician, engineer and producer, who has accompanied us in very special moments over the last 18 years” -, some media reported erroneously and without due investigation that he would be the band’s bassist. However, this function was assumed from the beginning by PJnickname of Paulo Roberto Diniz Junior.
For a moment many internet users were confused, both because they thought that Tommaso was really the bassist of Jota Quest, and because they believed that PJ was actually dead. It was necessary for the gang itself to publish a clarification on their networks, confirming Renato’s functions.
“Contrary to what was erroneously announced by the media, the band JOTA QUEST clarifies that we have NOT lost our bassist (PJ), but rather our great friend Renato Tommaso, PJ’s roadie and technical producer. We once again reinforce our deep feelings to the friends and family of dear Renato, and we thank everyone for the countless messages of support and affection.”
PJ also spoke via online text. The bassist played a screenshot of one of the vehicles spreading the disinformation and criticized what he calls “Brazilian cultural media.” Read below.
“For some time everyone has known that Brazilian music criticism and cultural media are losing all importance, perhaps due to the need for speed in the transmission of information (due to the ‘plague’ of social media), the new ‘reporters’ in the cultural area it’s more for novice ‘bloggers’ than for a real scholar. I miss the great music reporters like Sérgio Martins, Pedro Alexandre Sanches, among others.
How can such news come out? Everyone who follows me knows that the person who died was my great friend Renato, who was my bass player. And a report like that, from an important site, doesn’t even know that I have been the bassist of Jota Quest for only 30 years, at this point in the championship! I believe that this is first and foremost a lack of respect towards Renato, because they didn’t look into the news further. And, secondly, because they spread completely false information.
Guys, let’s study music, listen to music, delve into culture. This is the advice I give to new reporters, new music critics and people who work with culture and arts in the country. It’s too difficult. The ignorance is total. This cannot happen under any circumstances.”
