Argentine court charges five people with Liam Payne’s death

The trial involves charges of murder and drug dealing against the English singer, who died after falling in a hotel in Buenos Aires

Investigations and accusations

Argentine courts have prosecuted five people over the death of Liam Payne, a former member of the band One Direction, who died last October at the age of 31. The singer fell from the third floor of the Hotel CasaSur Palermo, where he was staying in Buenos Aires.

The defendants include Gilda Martin, the hotel’s manager, and employee Esteban Grassi, as well as Roger Nores, a close friend of Payne, all charged with manslaughter, according to a statement from Argentina’s National Penitentiary and Penitentiary Prosecutor’s Office.

Hotel employees Braian Paiz and Ezequiel Pereyra were also formally charged, but for the alleged delivery of illicit substances to the singer.

Preventive detention and evolution of the case

The judge in charge of the case ordered the precautionary custody of two of the accused, a measure which reinforces the seriousness of the accusations. In November the Court had already reported that three people were involved in the case, but their names had not been revealed until then.

Payne attempted to leave the hotel room using the balcony, according to information released by the British newspaper Daily Mail. Reports indicate that hotel staff were aware in advance that the singer had threatened this action.

Images and testimonials

Hotel security cameras recorded Payne in the lobby shortly before his death. The video shows the singer apparently having convulsions, probably due to drug use. Employees reportedly chose to carry him unconscious to his room, a decision now called into question in the legal process.
