The musician, also known for his decades-long involvement with Motörhead, contracted an infection after twisting his foot and relying on self-medication
Recently the world of heavy music almost lost one of its greatest drummers. Mikekey Deemember of Scorpions since 2016 and known for decades of involvement with Driving headhe spent three weeks in hospital due to a “very serious blood infection”, as he himself defined it.
The news was shared by Dee in a statement on social media (via Igor Miranda’s website). The drummer said he was unable to respond to Merry Christmas and New Year messages due to hospitalization.
“I was admitted to hospital with a very serious blood infection (sepsis). I was hospitalized for three weeks, but now I’m at home fighting this nasty bacteria. Luckily, I received fantastic care at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, my hometown. So, thank you very much to all the doctors and nurses who provided me with the best care. After several operations, I am now back home and the tests are all going in the right direction, I still have a lot of recovery and rehabilitation to go .”
Also in the text, Mikkey states that he is recovering and intends to return to the stage on February 27, when the Scorpions begin a season of shows as Las Vegas residents. Less than two months later, the band will begin a tour of Latin America, playing Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Colombia and Ecuador. In our country, the group performs in Brasilia (16/04, with Judas Priest and Europe), Sao Paulo (19/04, at the Monsters of Rock festival) and Rio de Janeiro (21/04, solo date at Qualistage).
“We have an amazing 2025 ahead of us, celebrating 60 years of Scorpions and lots of exciting shows around the world. So I can’t wait to see you all on the road and rocking out! Wishing you all an amazing 2025.” with good health and lots of Rock n’Roll!”
What happened to Mikkey Dee?
In his first interview after the accident, Mikkey Dee provided more details about his hospitalization. To the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet (go Chatty), said the situation began after a sprained foot. Even with a swollen ankle, the drummer preferred to self-medicate with paracetamol and anti-inflammatories and continue to perform with a Christmas musical project.
“My ankle swelled like hell, then it took on a strange shape and look, it looked like a very cooked ham. I got really sick, so I had to go by ambulance to Sahlgrenska hospital, and there they discovered a lot of changes, so they gave me top priority. I had to go to the operating room immediately, the first of three. They removed what was dead, infected and seriously compromised.”
Ultimately, Dee summed up the severity of his case in one sentence:
“If it had taken one more day, I would have played the drums Lemmy [Kilmister, líder do Motörhead falecido em 2015] in heaven – I can say that.”
In addition to Scorpions and Motörhead (a group of which he was a member from 1992 to 2015), Mikkey has played with King Diamond AND Don Dokken. However, he recorded a good part of the album The rabbit is not easy (2003), from HIas a studio musician.
