According to the director, it was “heartbreaking” to see a woman use a garden hose to control a fire that was engulfing her 90-year-old parents’ home.
Actor, director and filmmaker Tyler Perry used his Instagram profile to talk about the situation facing the city of Los Angeles. The city, capital of the American film industry, was hit by the largest forest fire in its history. The tycoon spoke about the position of insurance companies, which before the tragedy did not renew policies.
Perry said it was “heartbreaking” to watch a daughter use a garden hose to fight a fire that engulfed her parents’ 90-year-old home after their insurance was canceled. “Does anyone else find it scary that insurance companies can take billions of dollars from communities for years and then suddenly be allowed to cancel millions of policies on the same people they enriched themselves with?”
Last March, California’s largest home insurer, State Farm, announced it would not renew 30,000 homeownership and condo policies once they expired. Another company in the same segment, Chubb, has stopped issuing new policies for expensive homes with high fire risk.
“People who paid for insurance their whole lives were left with nothing out of pure greed,” he wrote. “As I am trying to figure out what steps to take to do everything I can to help as many people as possible, I am keeping everyone in my prayers.”
