One of the main names in international music in the 2010s, Miller died at the age of 26 on September 7, 2018 as a result of an accidental drug overdose. It is worth remembering how Balloonism is the artist’s second posthumous project – the first was Circlesreleased in 2020.
The rapper’s new album will feature SZA in music “DJ’s Chord Organ” and will be released next Friday, the 17th. Delusional Thomasalter-ego of mac millerappears in the track “Transformations.” Officially, the project won the single “5 Dollar Pony Rides.”
Additionally, an animated short film, also titled Balloonismwill be shown in the United States (New York and Pittsburgh) for “one night only” next Wednesday, 15th, with international distribution (London, Dublin, Paris, Auckland, Melbourne, Sydney and Toronto) scheduled for Thursday, 16th.
The short’s narrative “follows a group of school friends transfigured by the music of a chordal organ and thrust into a world of shadows,” says the official synopsis. “Swallowed by the turtle of time, they must trudge through the underbelly of adulthood.”
According to information from the NMEthe estate of mac miller revealed that the idea of Balloonism emerged as recently as 2013: “It’s a project that was of great importance to Malcolm – as he commissioned artwork for it and discussions about when it should be released occurred regularly, although ultimately GO:OD AM and subsequent albums ended up taking precedence.”
We believe the project showcases both the breadth of his musical talents and his fearlessness as an artist. Given that unofficial versions of the album have been circulating online for years and that the release of Balloonism it was something that Malcolm often expressed to be important to him, we felt it more appropriate to present an official version of the project to the world.
