David Lynch, iconic director of Twin Peaks and Eraserhead, has died at the age of 78

The artist’s family confirmed the news in a publication published on Facebook. He leaves behind two daughters, two sons and his wife, Emily Stofle.

Known for dark and surrealist films and series, Lynch he had been diagnosed with emphysema due to his lifelong smoking, to the point where he could no longer leave the house to drive. “There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But as he said: ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not the hole,'” the relatives complained.

David Lynch began his career as a painter and creator of animated shorts and live action. In the first movie, Eraserhe attracted attention for his exaggerated and uncompromising style. It didn’t take long to be featured in the awards: with The Elephant Manreceived eight nominations in Oscaras in Best director.

He also left a big mark on television. With Twin peaksstarted in 1990, told the story (created together Marco Gelo) investigation into the mysterious murder of a high school student. Despite the initial success, the second season did not register good audiences, but the franchise received a film, entitled Twin Peaks: The Last Days of Laura Palmerin 1992. The third season came about 25 years later and continued where the second year ended.

In the interview book Lynch on Lynchsince 2005, the iconic filmmaker has spoken about the enigmatic core of his work with the auteur Chris Rodley and how he failed to define the meaning of his work for viewers.

“Well, imagine if you found a book of puzzles and could start solving them, but they would be really complicated,” he said. “The mysteries would become apparent and thrill you. We’ve all found this book of puzzles and that’s exactly what’s happening. And you can figure them out. The problem is, you figure it out within yourself, and even if you told someone, that person wouldn’t. would I don’t believe you or understand you the same way you do.”
