Chris Jericho shares his thoughts on Vince McMahon’s retirement from WWE and whether it could affect AEW

The world of pro wrestling was hit with a mental effect from Judas in the days leading up to SummerSlam 2022, when WWE boss Vince McMahon announced he was stepping down as CEO. The decision was made as is the 76-year-old under investigation for alleged silent payment of money to resolve past employee misconduct complaints, although retirement is not directly related. Chris Jericho, who has worked with Vince McMahon for nearly two decades, talked to Gossipify. post-WWE success with AEW but he intervened in McMahon’s resignation after so many years.

Jericho, who recently appeared as a guest star on impractical pranksters , sat down with Gossipify at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, where he shared why he thinks Vince McMahon is probably a good idea overall. In his words:

The thing is, for me, I haven’t worked at WWE since 2017. And I’ve worked on it for nearly 20 years. I’ve always enjoyed working with Vince. I learned a lot from him. And, you know, he’s had a great career. And then taking a step back is, you know, probably the best thing for him, physically too, because he gets so erratic with the workload he has.

After taking over promotion from his father in 1982, Vince McMahon has essentially gone to great lengths to maintain as much control and popularity as possible in the professional wrestling industry, with more than one bridge burned in the process. The fact that he spent a good chunk of those years in the ring as a villain in history no doubt added physical stress to everything else, which makes it quite surprising that he’s been around for so long. . (Not that surprising considering his ego, but nonetheless.)

As much as Chris Jericho learned from Vince McMahon during his WWE years, he and others within AEW have also learned lessons on what not to do to make their organization stand out. Not that they pay much attention to current events anyway. Here’s how Jericho said it:

I think one of the best things we’ve done as a company with AEW is that of course we know WWE exists, and of course we know they are out there and they see us as 1000% competition. But we don’t really care what happens in your world. We are much more interested in our programs, we share the best shows we can and improve everything we can by telling the best stories we can. So for me they are kind of a ship in their own right and we are much more diligent with the AEW in general. I mean, like I said, I care, but I don’t really care.

With Vince McMahon he now renounces the suit (the hija Stephanie McMahon se desempeñaba as directora ejecutiva interina as the survey de la Junta de WWE en los primeros días was), which potentially stable a change en la form en que the company maneja las cosas in the future. We already know that creatives will be go further with more mature content in the future But having someone outside the McMahon family in the driver’s seat would be foolish, assuming that person was in legitimate control. Sara? Triple H when I get full ? It is not out of the question.

For what it’s worth, Chris Jericho doesn’t see Vince McMahon’s retirement in any way impacting things at AEW, but he’s not saying that nothing is impossible when it comes to potential matchups. In his words:

Will it affect us anyway? We’ll see … I don’t know if there will ever be, you know, a pay-per-view crossover between WWE and AEW. But strange things have happened. We will see.

Although no one should raise expectations for the day WWE and AEW will cross paths in the ring peacock subscribers (This is HBO Max subscribers ), it sure seems like a good time to start making noise online to convince any power that we would like this to happen someday. Assuming the card is awesome. Or even pretty good.
