Known as the lead singer and lyricist of the iconic rock band REM, Michael Stipe called for a boycott of social networks like Facebook AND Instagram to protest the rise of the far right in the United States.

In a publication created in Instagramthe 65-year-old artist told his followers to log out of all Meta platforms, which is also responsible for applications like Whatsapp, Messenger, Discussions, Giphy, Metaquest AND Rayban Metabetween 19 and 26 January 2025.

“I will be offline during the week. Please consider doing the same so that companies like Meta can imagine that there may be consequences for helping the far right advance in the United States and around the world,” he said. “Or are we so addicted that we can’t disconnect for a week?”

It’s so disgusting. I’m very happy to go away for a week as a form of protest, then I’ll come back and decide what to do from there.
