The Angra guitarist signs a report to prove that Adele plagiarized the Brazilian musician

Rafael Bittencourt was chosen for his academic training in composition and arranging

The guitarist of Angra, Rafael Bittencourtwas invited by the defense of Toninho Geraes write a report that will be used as evidence of plagiarism of the song Women. The song was apparently copied by the singer Adele and from the American manufacturer Greg Kurstinwho sign Millions of years agoreleased on the album 25by the English, in 2015.

According to lawyer Fredímio Biasotto Trotta, who defends the Brazilian composer, “the report is being prepared by Rafael Bittencourt and is already being finalized”.

Also according to Fredímio, the guitarist was chosen because he had an academic background in composition and arranging, which adds more credibility to the relationship. “In this process, the original work and the one questioned are analyzed in depth, looking for explicit and hidden similarities,” explains the lawyer.

Al The globethe musician stated that “the two works can be performed simultaneously without cacophony, without blurring the harmony, rhythmic idea or melody”. Which would indicate plagiarism. The artist also stated that he did not disingenuously believe in the British singer’s composition, but that they may have listened to Toninho’s song so many times that, when they composed it Million Years Ago, they did not realize that it was a copy.

The defense of Adele and Universal Music Publishing, her publisher in Brazil, denies plagiarism. According to them, there are similarities between the two songs motivated by a cliché, which would be a chord progression through the circle of fifths, a harmonic sequence used since the Baroque period, with examples in Vivaldi and Bach.

But Toninho’s lawyer, who is also a musician, rejects the defense, explaining that “they are not in sequence of fifths (cycle of fifths), as Universal claims, but in ascending fourths. And only the first four chords, the rest follow different standards.” He also points out that the duo Kurstin and Adele created the melody in the format of Simone’s interpretation and the harmony (chord sequence, accompaniment) from Martinho da Vila’s recording.

While the trial is ongoing, Toninho’s defense obtained a court order calling for Adele’s music to be removed from digital platforms, which so far has not happened.
