Trajectory marked by bossa nova and theatre

Singer and actress Maricenne Costa died on Saturday (18/1), at the age of 89, after years of battling Alzheimer’s disease. The information was confirmed by her sister, Elisabeth Sene Costa.

Maricenne was one of the members of São Paulo’s bossa nova movement, recognized for his unique voice. In 1962, musician João Gilberto praised her talent: “Your voice has colors, Maricenne. Never silence that colorful voice.”

Born in 1935 in Cruzeiro, in the hinterland of São Paulo, Maricenne began singing accompanied by her mother on the piano. His musical career officially began in 1958, when he won the competition “A Voz de Ouro do Brasil”, on TV Tupi. In the same year he released his first single with the songs “Quem Sou Eu”, by Dolores Duran and Ribamar, and “O Amor Morre no Olhar”, by Guerra Peixe and Jair Amorim.

First recording by Chico Buarque

Maricenne Costa was responsible for the recording of Chico Buarque’s first composition on disc. In 1964 he recorded the single “Marcha para um Dia de Sol”, collaborating with the composer at the beginning of his career.

In the 1960s he represented bossa nova on international tours, including performances in the United States alongside organist Walter Wanderley, as well as performances in Portugal.

From punk to samba

Maricenne released albums that explored different musical aspects. In 1992 he presented “Correntes Alternadas”, inspired by punk. Seven years later, he recorded “Como Tem Passado!!”, a work based on the research of musical historian José Ramos Tinhorão, recovering rhythms such as lundu, maxixe and samba. His last album was 2009’s “Bossa.SP,” reaffirming his São Paulo bossa nova roots.

In addition to music, Maricenne has also excelled in theatre, working alongside artists such as Myriam Muniz, Ricardo Blat and Marcos Caruso. She believed that she did not become so famous in music because it was divided into different phases.

Her life and work were recorded in the book “Maricenne Costa – A Cantora da Voz Colorida”, written by her sister Elisabeth and published in 2022.
