Shark Week returns to Discovery for its 34th year from July 24, and the first night will feature a special that explores the unique story of one man’s survival after encountering a great white shark in a format fans will love. already, regardless of whether you are tuning in to us for the first time or have watched for three decades – I didn’t know that before. Shark Week veteran, executive producer and air jaws creator Jeff Kurr sat down with Gossipify to talk about the special, called Great open white sea.
Great open white sea is one of three specials opening the first night of Shark Week this year, and it will be something viewers won’t want to miss, according to what Jeff Kurr teased about what’s in store. It will also be a special that has a personal connection with the producer as it involves an accident with a friend and what happened next. Kurr anticipated:
Great White Open Ocean is a film that follows the story of a friend of mine, an expert shark diver named Jimi Partington. In fact, he survived being hit from below by a 16-foot great white shark. We were able to film this encounter, and it is probably the most spectacular sequence in Shark Week history. It’s also miraculous, because when Jimi was hit by the shark, he didn’t get a scratch. In fact, to save his life he had to swim to the boat, but he was fine. But there is much more to this film than this encounter.
Anything that qualifies as “the most spectacular footage in Shark Week history” is a must see, after everything the Discovery event has aired since 1988, including everything from the fan favorite. air jaws specials for celebrity appearances (including the Donkey group last year ), the participation of famous athletes (such as Michael Phelps proves he is faster than a shark ), much more.
Luckily, Great open white sea is a story about Jimi Partington’s recovery after his “miraculous” survival without a scratch, as well as the initial accident. Jeff Kurr explained how the special will dive into what followed that encounter with the 16-foot tall white, saying:
I think what makes Great White Open Ocean such an amazing story is that we follow Jimi back as he tries to dive again with the great white sharks, to try to overcome his post-traumatic stress disorder he had since the first accident, trying to get back in the saddle And then he almost died a second time. I don’t want to reveal what happened the second time around, it would be a spoiler, but I’ve been with him both times. It was an extremely emotional and difficult situation for me to be with this guy, because he’s a friend of mine, and to see him almost die twice, and to film him and tell his story about him … it’s visually spectacular. , and a very moving emotional story.
Anyone willing to dive with great white sharks again after a terrifying encounter is sure to have a thrilling story; in Jimi Partington’s case, viewers will see him survive another near-death experience before the special ends, but will have to tune in Sunday night for details of his journey.
If all that Jeff Kurr shared with Gossipify Great open white sea looks different than what Shark Week fans would normally expect from Discovery during its busiest Shark Week of the year, there’s a good reason for that. He explained a key way he stands out and his hopes for viewers’ reaction:
[It’s] things you don’t normally associate with Shark Week, but I was really happy that some of the senior executives at Shark Week supported this project and allowed me to do it in some sort of cinematic format. It’s a longer format than what normally happens at Shark Week, but it’s just a beautiful and amazing story. And I hope everyone sees and likes it.
The world premiere of Great open white sea airing Sunday, July 24 at 10:30 PM ET on Discovery as one of the specials to kick off the first day of shark week 2022 . The night begins with Great white battlefield at 8 p.m. ET and continues with Jackass Shark Week 2.0 (with the cast of Donkey franchising for the second time ) at 9 p.m. ET.
Jeff Kurr also has three other specials airing as part of the 2022 event on Discovery, including the latest episode of air jaws with a best gun inclined Monday night.
