Music that playing guitar is like sex, according to Marty Friedman (former Megadeth)

Music that playing guitar is like sex, according to Marty Friedman (former Megadeth)

Comparison made by the musician has nothing to do with pleasures transmitted by both activities: context is just practice

Emotions transmitted by music have already been compared to the pleasures obtained by sex by many people, on different occasions. However, the comparison of Marty Friedman Between playing guitar and having sex is, triviality apart, unusual.

The former guitarist of Megadethwhich will be in Brazil for tour with Kiko Loureiro between May and June, shared the analogy in a recent interview with Ultimate Guitar. It all started when he, one of the most worshiped virtuous of the instrument, admitted that he has not practiced much in the last three decades, because he is always playing: whether composing, rehearsing, recording or performing shows.

“After this interview, I will make a video for a guitar magazine in Japan. Doing this kind of thing is much more beneficial than any other type of practice.”

Then came the comparison with sex. For him, the practice needs to occur in the desired scenario. There is no point in training alone at home if the idea is to use your skills in other contexts. You, who are on the other side reading this text, understand what it means, right?

“Everything I say about this can be related to sex in some way. If you practice at home, you will be good at practicing at home. If you go out and do the real thing, you’ll be good at doing the real thing. Everything relates to any double meaning you can imagine. ”

Sacana games aside, Friedman has defined himself as a lucky guy for performing shows since he was 14 years old. That way, it reflects:

“All I’ve done since then is to create music and touch it, and have to explain it at guitar events or instructional videos. I have to know exactly what I’m doing. Even when you record music videos: when you show your fingers, you have to know exactly what you are playing in that recording. My music is very full of nuances, so it gave a job to leave my fingers exactly the same as the album. Doing this is much more beneficial for my ultimate goal than being practicing at home. ”

Marty’s comments are not only for guitarists: any aspiring musician can absorb her advice. Your final statement, even, makes this clear: focus on the goals.

“Many will say, ‘Well, I’m not in a band and I can’t play in front of people.’ So make your top priority not to practice the instrument, but create opportunities to play in front of people. This is your greatest priority. While you do this, you will develop the things your hands need to do. If you have a goal as a show, you will strive much more than training at home without objective. Practice networking, practice setting up a band, practice perform shows. I recommend.”
