“I told my wife: ‘Wow, people are hating me,'” the businessman said when recalling negative initial reactions to a specific attraction
The organization of Rock in Rio It can please everyone with their attractions choices. ROBERTO MEDINAthe creator of the event, revealed a particular situation where an artist’s lineup yielded initial criticism, but was rewarded due to the quality of the show offered.
In an interview with Braulio Lorentz for the G1Medina stated that she brought the rapper Travis Scott For the 2024 edition of the event as a “personal choice”. However, the businessman was surprised by the negative repercussion on social networks regarding the ad.
The subject was addressed after Roberto’s comments about another type of criticism of Rock in Rio: the repetition of attractions. The creator of the event says this is a question that fits as a whole to the music industry: it is necessary to “create bands that can fill this desire for renewal,” because, in his words, “hardly an event can renew the lineup.”
“In 1985, when Rock in Rio began, it was very easy. No one had come to Brazil and so it was for a while… Today, you have a great demand on the same bands. I don’t know the problem for less renewal today. But okay, as I said, you will always have a part of the people who criticize you and I didn’t get used to it. ”
Then Medina spoke about Travis Scott. The businessman said he made a personal bet on the American rapper, even aware that he was “very different” for the event profile. As a result, criticism came up when Trap’s artist was announced – something that diluted over time, as the star was the main attraction of one of the days with tickets sold out faster in the 2024 edition of the event.
“Travis Scott was a personal choice of mine, because I was curious to see, but it was very different for Rock in Rio. Then I entered Twitter and was there: Roberto Medina in the trending topics. I was all proud. I said, ‘Wow, how cool.’ But then I went to see and: ‘Caraca, everyone talking bad about me! My God!’ I turned off the business quickly, I didn’t want to see anything else. I told my wife, ‘Wow, people are hating me.’ But then it allocated and it was too much. ”

Rock in Rio and Trap
Given the situation, Roberto Medina was invited to reflect on the hit that represented the arrival of Trap at Rock in Rio. The inclusion of the musical style offered the event a renewal of lineup and proposal. He comments:
“And if they were two days [dedicados ao trap]would have packed both. But I didn’t do that day for that. There are also choices like that of Neil Youngwhich makes no sense to sell tickets, but it is an important name in rock history. This also happened with the Whothat we had the opportunity to bring. It was an expensive band and I knew that, honestly, it made no sense… But my thinking is not extractive, even Rock in Rio being a business. ”
The next edition of Rock in Rio will be held in 2026. Before that, the company responsible for the festival promotes in São Paulo the second edition of The Town. The event takes place at the Interlagos racetrack next September, and already has Katy Perry, Green Day, Bruce Dickinsonamong others, as confirmed attractions.
