Music Music that was the soul of Pink Floyd, according to David Gilmourcinco musicians passed the band as official members – and, in the guitarist’s view, only one could be defined in such a way to work

Five musicians passed the band as official members – and, in the guitarist’s view, only one of them could be defined in such a way

Officially, only five people can be cited as members of the Pink Floyd: Syd Barrett (voice/guitar), Roger Waters (voice/low), Richard Wright (keyboards), Nick Mason (battery) and David Gilmour (voice/guitar). And, according to the last mentioned, one of these musicians represents the band’s “soul”, one of the most successful in rock history.

In a chat from 2007 to Foolish (via Pinkfloydz.com), the guitarist and singer attributed such a definition to Wright, who died a year after that interview. The subject was approached while Gilmour discussed the importance of “Echoes”music released by the group in 1971 as part of the Meddle album.

He said:

‘Echoes’ He marked a real moment of clarity, the moment when we all realized we were coming somewhere, finding a direction. And Rick, which in many ways is the soul of Pink Floyd, was part of it as much as anyone. ”

David also says that “Echoes”Although it has shared credits among the four members of the most famous formation (all cited in the first paragraph except Syd Barrett), it has a majority authorship of it and Richard. The guitarist says:

“If you are looking at those who wrote what, I would say 80% of the musical part in ‘Echoes’ is mine or Rick.”

Interestingly, Wright’s trajectory with Pink Floyd was winding, either for the loss of space as a composer throughout the 1970s or its departure in 1981, at the height of conflicts with Roger Waters. With his departure, the keyboardist would return in 1987, but only as a member hired due to a legal imbroglio – even if he was presented as an official member.

Reason for Pink Floyd not coming back

In an interview from 2024 to Classic RockDavid Gilmour said he put “this whole Pink Floyd thing to hibernate for many, many years.” And the reason for a meeting not even discussed is precisely the absence of Richard Wright.

“It’s impossible to go back without Rick. And I would not like it. It’s over. ”

In addition, Gilmour claims to be happy with his solo career. A new album, Luck and StrangeIt was released last September-and the artist held a short series of shows to promote it.

“I am very happy and pleased with the little team I have around me today. We had a lot of offers to make tours, but I’m in this selfish position to have money more than enough and have had fame more than enough. ”

He was also punctual in clarifying that he has no dissatisfaction with the work done with Pink Floyd. Perhaps that is why you are not willing to consider an expansion of this work.

“I just don’t need these things today. I wouldn’t want anyone to have the impression that I am not a hundred percent happy and pleased with the work I did with Pink Floyd over the years, which have been productive, satisfactory and happy, especially. It’s fantastic. But my focus now is different. ”

Pink Floyd left the scene as one of the greatest bands in history. It is estimated that you have sold over 250 million records across the planet. Two of their albums are among the most popular of all time: The Dark Side of the Moon (1973) and The Wall (1979), respectively with 45 and 30 million units sold.
