Band would become a phenomenon of popularity as the 1980s unfolded, but its sound generated initial strangeness
THE Metallic It was established in the early 1980s as the main representative of the so -called Thrash Metal, a subgenre that fired influences from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) and punk rock, among other elements. It was a different sound – which, as expected, generated reactions divided by the public.
Musicians of Ravenband that has toured them in the early days, guarantee that the quartet led by James Hetfield(voice and guitar) and Lars Ulrich (battery) displeased a lot of people when they came up. The strangeness came, in particular, due to the faster sound presented by the group – going beyond even the speed that marked the influential Motörhead In that same period.
In an interview with Guitar World, the brothers John and Mark Gallagherwho command the Raventhey initially remembered the first time they heard of their colleagues: when they prepared for the tour of their third album, All For One (1983). Hetfield, Ulrich and company had just made the debut album available, KILL ‘IN ALL (1983). John stated:
“When you think about the big bands of San Francisco, there is a long list. There was Y & T and even the Journey. But no, it was the Metallic. We are like, ‘Who are these?’ Then they sent us a cassette tape. At first, I wondered if the disc was running at the right speed. It looked like you were putting an album from Motörhead A 78 RPM [rotações por minuto, velocidade bem acima do normal para um álbum]. ”
Still, the Gallagher brothers – no, are not those of the Oasis -They liked and accepted them to the tour. The problem is that many fans didn’t like it. Mark Gallagher highlights:
“We kind of like it. We thought it was like a Motörhead More refined, like, really f#da. But when we went out and played at the shows, many places didn’t like Metallic. They were like, ‘What the hell is this?’ In addition to the main markets, we played in some crazy places on that tour, such as Bald Knob, Arkansas, with some really strange shows. It was quite an experience. ”

Metallica’s early days
Despite the initial reaction, the Metallic It was not so long to please the public. Proof of this is that KILL ‘IN ALL It exceeded the expectation of sales of the time. Its growth was very organic, as the album came out of an independent label, Megaforce. At the end of 1984, the work had registered 60,000 copies sold in Europe, preparing land for the phenomenon of popularity that is later witnessing with Ride the lightning (1984), MASTER OF PUPPETS (1986), among others.
