Rolling Stone Brazil: A few days ago, you launched a new version of “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You” in partnership with Mobile game Clash Royale. How did this partnership with the franchise come about?
As I have been associated with love songs for a long time, I am often addressed about Valentine’s Day campaigns or events. With my story doing comic content, as Michael Bolton’s Big, Sexy Valentine’s Day SpecialNetflix is a seemingly winning combination to marry my heart and humor! So when Barbarian wanted to send a love letter to the fans, he called me (I think he must have seen the special). And that’s how our collaboration in “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You” came up.
The music video has a humorous and, of course, romantic climate. What kind of new approach did you want to bring with your hit?
I am always excited to see what a team of talented and creative people will create to delight their fans. The concept of the music video was created by Barbarian. I was just there for inspiration and that’s all I always wanted from my voice and my music: inspire and raise people around the world.
What is it like to see one of your classics cross generations and media? What did you expect from this partnership?
I think any artist’s dream is to make his legacy transcend all borders. It’s amazing for me to see the evolution of this song, which I wrote to Laura Branigan, becoming a number 1 hit in the 1980s – and again in the 1990s – with my own recording winning my first Grammy. Now, seeing Barbarian bring her to a new generation of people around the world-it’s simply amazing.
This is not the first time your music has appeared in the audiovisual context. I remember vividly seeing you singing “When a Man Loves a Woman”, a song written by Calvin Lewis and Andrew Wright that his voice made famous, in Two and a Half Men. For you, what is it like to explore music in other art types, media and formats?
I did a lot of expensive music videos at the time the record labels invested infinite amounts of money in marketing and promoting front line artists. Still, I have never seen any video as big as my collaboration with The Lonely Island in “Jack Sparrow”, which debuted at Saturday Night Live, then became a live present on Emmy television and has now reached almost 250 million Views on Youtube. The means have changed and these new ways to reach the audience are huge.
And your mood is very striking, I love your collaborations with Lonely Island, and your song with “Clash Royale” has this firm tone of humor. For you, what is it like to work relaxed?
I would like to say that there is a “relaxed” side at work, but even when you are having fun and laughing a lot, work is intense and you want to make it the best possible, and when you have a team of super talented creatives, Everyone is encouraged to get even louder. But this search for excellence is part of the reward.
About a year and a half ago, you released the studio album SPARK OF LIGHTwhich represented his first album of originals in 15 years. As Was it the creative process and return to this side of your art? Was it hard to compose again?
The creative process was deeply rewarding because I returned to my composer roots and really reserved time to make personal thoughts and feelings through these songs. Everything seemed very natural and inspiring. I collaborated with a wide range of contemporary composers, producers and artists and each brought something so unique to the process, so I was always learning and expanding in new directions. Whether it’s a new style of production or just a total reduction in production, I found every collaboration and music an exciting process. This journey began during the pandemic, which was where the idea of ”Beautiful World” came up and continued over the next two years until we met a body of work I am very proud of and, in fact, is my first album with all the original songs of my own.
Finally, what can we expect from your next steps?
In fact, I came across some old recordings that have never been released and I’m working on and I’m very excited to share soon. Meanwhile, we are releasing a book of my life in photos, captured by my dear friend and incredibly talented Timothy White photographer.
