12 Years of One Direction: The X Factor releases never-before-seen footage of how boy band formed; watch

In celebration of One Direction’s 12th anniversary, the talent show shared a rare video of the boy band’s formation.

Exactly 12 years ago one of the biggest boy bands of Generation Z was formed. Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik and Niall Horan didn’t know it at the time, but their lives after the talent show auditions The X Factorwould never be the same again.

After being eliminated in the individual qualifiers, the five youngsters were called back to the stage, where they received the news that the judges decided to give them another chance, this time as a group. This Saturday, July 23, the The X Factor shared rare footage of how the boy band was formed.

In the video, you can see the judges evaluating the male contestants and joining the five members into a single group, based on talent, looks and even charisma on stage. By placing the photos of Styles, Tomlinson, Payne, Malik and Horan together, Simon Cowell praises the formation of what would become a phenomenon in pop music in the years to come.

Despite placing third in the final of the The X Factora One Direction had already won a much bigger prize outside the program: a loyal legion of fans who accompany them to the present day, even in a solo career. The following year they launched Up All Night (2011), the boy band’s debut album, and soon embarked on their first tour.

There were five albums, four DVDs and three tours, with the last one including three shows in Brazil in 2014 – two performances in São Paulo and one in Rio de Janeiro. In 2015, Malik announced the band’s departure shortly before the release of the last record, Made in The AM.

Some time later, the group surprised fans with the sad news that they would go on hiatus. However, each of the five members have gone on to dedicate themselves to solo projects and a return together back to the stage seems increasingly distant – despite being a desire of most musicians.

One Direction they may no longer be together as a group, yet the legacy they left behind in the music of the 2010s is undeniable. There were several successes throughout his career, including a music video “What Makes You Beautiful,” that surpasses 1 billion views on YouTube, the boy band’s first big hit.
