History of the band was marked by series of conflicts, but guitarist believes that in particular phase became unsurpassed in the worst sense

The original formation of Pink Floyd has gone through a series of conflicts over the years. Since the 1970s, there was a kind of dispute for creative control of the band, assumed by the bassist Roger Waters. However, the worst moments of the group took place in the 1980s.

At least this is the guitarist’s opinion David Gilmour. In an interview of 1987 to Rolling Stone USA (via Igor Miranda website), the musician defined the period that generated the album The Final Cut (1983) as the lowest point of the group’s trajectory.

The successor of the multiplatin The Wall (1979) failed to repeat the hit standard achieved by the band in previous years. With lyrics inspired by the Falkland War and a series of references to the personal history of Waters, the album sold less than all those released after Meddle (1971).

Gilmour comments:

“[Foi um período] Very miserable. Even Roger says it was a miserable period – and it was he who made him that way, at least in my opinion. ”

The disagreements between them were basically based on the creative direction of Pink Floyd. David believed that several songs from The Final Cut They were not good enough to get on the album. The bassist, in turn, criticized the guitarist for failing to help with the compositions, leaving everything on his back.

In another interview, in the 2000s, Gilmour reinforces his point. Although the letters do not agree with their positions, the problem was different.

“There was all kinds of discussion about political matters, and I didn’t share his views. But never, never, I wanted to stay in his way to express the story of The Final Cut. I just didn’t think some of the songs were up to. ”

Roger Waters comments on his final album with Pink Floyd

Interestingly, Roger Waters seems to agree with David Gilmour: the period of The Final Cut It was the worst of Pink Floyd, at least internally. In an interview of 1987 Chris Salewicz, he reflected:

The Final Cut It was a torment to do, although I have heard him lately and really like him. But I don’t like the way I sang in it. You can hear a crazy tension everywhere. As if I was trying to express something, but being prevented because I was very tense. It was a horrible time. We were all fighting like dogs and cats. ”

Still according to Waters, The Final Cut It represents the moment when he and his colleagues perceive – or accept – that there was no more band. Thus, little surprises his decision to leave in 1985, leading to a legal dispute by the name of Pink Floyd, won by Gilmour and the drummer Nick Mason.

“In all, The Final Cut It sold three million copies (until 1987), which is not much for Pink Floyd. As a result, David Gilmour went out saying, ‘That’s it, I knew he (Waters) was wrong all the time.’ But it is ridiculous to judge a record only for sales. ”

Despite Waters’ appreciation, The Final Cut It is little represented in your solo shows. In its latest tour, This is not a drilljust a song on this album was played: “Two Suns in the Sunset”. According to the Setlist.fmthe range of the work in question that has gained the most space in the setlists is “Southampton Dock”with 266 performances – the latest in 2008.
