Song present on the debut album Hybrid Theory was not among the initial highlights pointed out by his own authors

No member of the Linkin Park I thought your debut album, Hybrid Theory (2000), would be so successful. This is the best-selling rock album of the 21st century-which, it is said, began in 2001, but the registered numbers (32 million copies) concern precisely the period in question.

The great hit of this work is “In The End”available as a single room. The track hit the top 10 of the charts from more than ten countries, including second place in the United States. Today, it accumulates almost 2 billion views on its YouTube music video.

Within the band, virtually no one thought the song would become a success. No wonder other songs were released as single before her – “One Step Closer”, “Papercut” and “Crawling”.

The subject was approached by Mike Shinoda in an interview of 2023 to broadcaster Howard Stern (via Igor Miranda website). Even in the position of one of the composers, the vocalist and multi-instrumentalist saw no potential in the track. Only one member was excited: the drummer Rob Bourdononly member who chose to be absent from the current meeting, with Emily Armstrong in vocals and Colin Brittain in his vacancy.

“It didn’t seem like something big or a hit. He was very young and did not know what a successful song was like. […] Rob said something like, ‘Man, this is the song we were waiting for, it’s the best song we have.’ ”

Hater of the work itself?

Shinoda still took the opportunity to deny that Chester Benningtondeceased singer in 2017, hated “In The End”. The artist even said this in interviews, but his colleague believes he had only other favorites.

“Chester didn’t hate ‘In the end’. He liked the music and really liked heavier songs. So they said that ‘In the end’ ‘It should be a single’ and this song is not what he would have chosen for that. ”

The creation of Linkin Park’s “In The End”

Still during the interview with Howard Stern, Mike Shinoda recalled the process of creating “In The End”. The artist said he created the piano line in just one night, part of the rap, the chorus chords and the beats. The atmosphere was not the most inviting.

“I was sitting in a place for rehearsals in Hollywood and Vine in Los Angeles. Outside there were addicts and prostitutes. We locked all the doors because we didn’t want anyone to come in. ”

According to the site database Setlist.fm, “In The End” It is the song that Linkin Park has played most live, with 759 performances. Behind her are “One Step Closer” (756) and “Papercut” (669), all from Hybrid Theory. Of other albums, the most remembered is “FAINT”, with 600 performances.
