Music great change promoted by the new Iron Maiden drummer, according to Bruce Dickinson

Simon Dawson was already rehearsing with the band before Nicko McBrain withdrawn from the tours – and his playing style impressed his colleagues

After more than four decades, Nicko McBrain will stop presenting yourself with the Iron Maiden. As reported last December, the 72 -year -old drummer withdrew from tour appointments, although he follows a member. Simon Dawsonnotorious for integrating the British Lion – Parallel Project of Steve HarrisMaiden bassist and leader-was cast to replace him.

Many fans are afraid of the change, as McBrain has a very characteristic style and Dawson, at least according to what is known about him in previous projects, does not have the same footprint. However, for the vocalist Bruce DickinsonThis is the great charm of the new colleague.

In an interview with the Musicians Institute (via Igor Miranda website), Dickinson revealed that Dawson was actually rehearsed with Maiden even before McBrain’s removal. The starter drummer held the entire previous tour, The Future Past, while recovering from a mini-AVC.

Until the last performances, in São Paulo, he had not yet resumed the movements in full. There was, therefore, a concern: If Nicko could not perform any shows, it was necessary to have some reserve – function in charge of Simon, who was already traveling with the band anyway because British Lion touches on the cities where Iron Maiden passes. Bruce comments:

“We already had a rehearsal with Simon in the last tour. Simon was along with British Lion. It was kind of a security for us. We expected Nicko to tour, but there were times during the show where, not so much his performance, but his body physically was really … we were worried.”

As several fans, Maiden members were also afraid, unknowingly if it would work. To scare off any questions, the band organized a rehearsal with Dawson amid the previous tour, more specifically in the American city of Portland, Oregon, last October.

“Simon was suggested by Steve and we all stayed: ‘Yes, but how do we know it will work?’ […] [Fizemos o ensaio e] Honestly, I was positively shocked: ‘Wow’. We played the whole set without a break. And this guy had not rehearsed with anyone. We could do a show that night with him if we had to do it. ”

Bruce then revealed the great change promoted by Simon. Musically, the new drummer is very similar to the late Clive burrNicko’s predecessor in the function and responsible for recording the first three albums of Iron Maiden. Apparently, therefore, Dawson has a more direct and strong – and less technical footprint compared to the holder for four decades. The singer explains:

“To be honest, if I closed my eyes at times during that rehearsal, it was like having Clive Burr back in the band, because he [Dawson] It has that feeling. It’s that big band swing. He has the same influences. And I just stayed: ‘Oh my God, wow.’ I’m really excited. ”
