How writing original music for High School Musical was different this season for Joshua Bassett when he started his solo career

The Wildcats are back, and this time High School Musical: The Musical – The series follows the next generation of East High drama kids over the summer holidays. In Season 3, which premiered its first episode last week, many new and varied elements are at play, but an exciting tradition continues: Joshua Bassett is still writing the show’s original music. And when we talk to him HSMTMTS star, talked about the song writing process for the new episodes.

Since their performances debut on the show, Joshua Bassett and Olivia Rodrigo have written songs for HSMTMTS, like their duet “Just For A Moment”. Since then, they have continued to use the show as a way to hone their talents, as evidenced by Bassett and Rodrigo who wrote original songs for the Disney + series during the second season. During our interview with Bassett, the actor shared how his last original song for Season 3 came about:

I have to write a song in episode one of the third season. Tim called me and said, “Hey, you got the job, I like you to write it down.” So we did a zoom call and as soon as he answered the zoom call, I immediately heard the melody and the lyrics and immediately thought, well, it had to be. So I registered the idea. And then we went to the studio a few days later and wrote it and it was a super easy and fun time. And it was great that I enjoy writing for my character and not for myself. So it was a very fun and very different experience from what I think seasons 1 and 2 were.

The song is called “Finally Free” and comes into play when Ricky drives his car to a summer camp to find his friends. The push comes in the wake of his split from girlfriend, Lily (played by Olivia Rose Keegan), after realizing the couple wasn’t ideal. As Joshua Bassett shared with Gossipify, he was asked to write the song for this pivotal moment in the series and was quickly able to cut it. review the HSMTMTS musical moment below:

Since his debut on the show, Joshua Bassett has ventured into his solo career and has released a number of self-produced singles. In September, the 21-year-old actor / singer will perform in a sold out world tour which will start in Toronto, Canada, travel across the United States and end in Europe. It appears that Bassett is heading towards the release of her first record and is well on his way to becoming a full-fledged artist, while continuing to be a part of the high school musical divided.

Meanwhile, Olivia Rodrigo exploded in a big way last year with her 2021 record. ACID, which earned him Grammys, huge streaming numbers and a recently concluded tour. While she is still a part of HSMTMTS, Rodrigo would receive a “significant farewell” this season. . Joshua Bassett also said this:

I haven’t been able to work with other cast members on the music for this show, but I will say without spoiler that other cast members have written music for this season, and it’s great, and I’m so excited that everyone can watch it. . But yeah, it’s always a pleasure when I’m writing for the series.

It seems that more and more cast members are stepping in and writing original songs for the show as Olivia Rodrigo moves away from her position as the main protagonist. This season will revolve around East High teens (mainly Sofia Wylie’s Gina, Matt Cornett’s EJ, Julia Lester’s Ashlyn, Dara Renee’s Kourtney, and Frankie Rodriguez’s Carlos) as they edit a production of Frozen at the summer camp. However, it’s good that Rodrigo and Bassett are still in the mix and are able to bring their musical talents into the process.

There is a lot going on in the third season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, which presents Corbin Bleu who plays a version of himself is a little ass and Hanna Montana Jason Earles as camp counselor . New episodes air every Wednesday, so make sure you have a Disney + membership. Also be sure to check out the movies and TV shows will arrive on Disney + in August .
