Band will perform with Dave Matthews Band, Richard Ashcroft and Paula Lima in the second of the four days of the festival in São Paulo
In addition to international weight attractions, the Best of Blues and Rock He prepared a strong and multigenerational selection of Brazilian artists for his tenth edition, again at Ibirapuera Park, in São Paulo. Among the national names announced, what has been active for the longer is the Red baron. The legendary B-rock band plays on June 8, second of the four days of the event, along with Dave Matthews Band, Richard Ashcroft and Soul Lee – Paula Lima sings Rita Lee.
The keyboardist Maurício Barros and the drummer Guto Goffionly remaining original members of the group founded in the early 1980s, are excited. In an interview with Rolling Stone Brazilthe musicians – who complete the training with Rodrigo Suricato (voice and guitar) and Fernando Magalhães (guitar) – They celebrated the opportunity not only to share the stage with other great artists, but also to present their new tour, “Life size”. Barros, in particular, has praised a specific artist of his day:
“A few years ago I watched a Richard Ashcroft concert in Buenos Aires [nota: certamente em 2016, única ocasião em que o cantor se apresentou na Argentina] And it was wonderful. I enjoy his work since the time of The Verve and follow his solo albums as well. ”
The show “Life Size” was introduced to the public in the latest edition of Rock in Rio last September. As a title, it uses the same name as the song released, also in September, from a poem left by Cazuzaoriginal vocalist deceased in 1990. The setlist must bring this track along with the true mountain of classics built by the Baron over the decades and, according to Maurício, even “Some blues that we don’t always play”. GUTO COMPLETES:
“We have this extensive repertoire, which have been a soundtrack for these last four decades in Brazil – some more times and some less, but we have this time representativeness. I believe the repertoire values all these victories.”

Cazuza is a respect “the size of life”
About the music that baptizes the excursion, Maurício Barros points out that his idea came from a meeting in which Lucinha AraújoCazuza’s mother, revealed the existence of unpublished letters of the son. After checking all the material, the quartet chose the composition that gave rise to “Life size”. “And we even won the Multishow Award for Best Rock Music”celebrated the keyboardist. Goffi, in turn, reflects:
“Having made this partnership with Cazuza these days, already in the third formation of the band, demonstrates that everyone who has passed the Baron takes place in our heart. We will always enjoy playing songs from Cazuza, [vocalista e guitarrista Roberto] Frejatfrom Of [Palmeira, baixista]the class that left good things in our repertoire. The lyrics of this came from a poem of his called ‘The center girls’But we extracted a piece of the lyrics that managed to take the music only from this universe of prostitution, which was what it proposed in the lyrics at first. Got more comprehensive. ”
In fact, Baron Vermelho is concerned to honor and demonstrate respect for former members during the shows. His live repertoire includes not only songs from the band’s earlier stages, but also works by his two former solo career singers-in Frejat’s case, because Barros worked with him on albums Love to start over (2001), About both of us and the rest of the world (2003) and Intimacy between strangers (2008).
Both Mauritius and Guto were impressed in realizing that in July the death of Cazuza turns 35. “Time does not stop! In fact, it is gone very early. A pity. But his lyrics remain relevant and current. His legacy is his work to be timeless! From the first album of the Baron to his solo work”comments the keyboardist, with the following complement of the drummer:
“It’s scary to remember that yesterday was next to the person and now it is no longer. Time is the devourer of all of us. Cazuza put a ‘little thing’ in rock. Not that rock in the past had no good Brazilian letters, we had already had Raul Seixas, Paulo Coelho, Rita Lee. But we are postMutant And the mutants sang ‘Yeah, Yeah, Yeah’, while, with Cazuza, it was’ Yeah, Yeah, it was’ Yeah ‘to space. Good poets know how to make good use of the word. At the Baron, it was rare for you to get some letter that has no good message. Cazuza opened our door. It was our lyricist Guru. Then we tried to continue, not imitating, but knowing the value of marginal poetry and ‘being straightforward’ in rock, without much metaphor, without being prolix. We learn from him. ”
Gift and future
Not only the past is the Red Baron, however. Since 2017 – that is, for almost a decade – the band has been with Rodrigo Suricato on vocals and guitar, in a combination that, besides the single “Life size”surrendered the album of unpublished Alive (2018) and rewritten discs #BarãoPraSepre (2018) and Baron 40 (2022). Apart from the countless shows, including appearances at festivals such as the aforementioned Rock in Rio, his “brother” Paulistano The Town And of course the coming best of blues and rock.
Mauricio Barros is exhaustive in commenting which one considers to be the great characteristic of the current baron:
“Few bands in the world managed to get three singers throughout their career. In this present phase, I would highlight our persistence and also the joy of playing this repertoire we have built over decades.”
Under the same perspective, Goffi elaborates:
“I challenge you to show, after years of career, a group that not only depends on a person, however strong it is. Cazuza, with all that force, left the group and continued with Frejat. We gave that morale to start singing, and he was firm to continue leading the band. With his departure, we believe that there were still things to be done. It was the same.
And “there is more” coming there. The drummer guarantees the existence of plans to record some more songs besides “Life size” and release an EP. The problem is, in your words, “Fix time to compose”. He explains:
“We also agreed that this authorial part of the new formation will always be done by the four, to arrive on time and get a collective partnership and have characteristics of the four in the songs. Alive has one like this, ‘I’m never just’. I really like the letter and commented to the band I thought we should do together, so we could have a theme direction and how to write, so as not to be a very different thing, as happened in Alive. ”
Already the keyboardist was not so excited to provide unprecedented material, due to, also in his words, “The way music is consumed today, with so many songs being released each week”. He ponders:
“It is more difficult to have public and even the media attention. So it often does not make up for all the investment and work to record an album. For this reason many artists have opted for the single format. Especially because, when setting up the script of the show, there is no way to leave out the big hits. But we have nothing ready to release soon.”
However, not even to Mauritius the doors for unprecedented material are closed. According to him, the priority is in continuing to go through the country with the tour, but the idea of launching news will be matured with the unfolding of the months.
