Bible music is very gay, ‘says Sufjan Stevens in an interview

Singer reflects on the sensual symbolism of religion and says he has an intimate relationship with God: ‘The Eucharist is the definitive erotic experience’ ‘

Sufjan Stevens shared provocative reflections on religion in a new interview with Volturestating that “the Bible is very gay.”

“It’s just a man. This is what happens when there is a patriarch that lasts for so long. Jesus was single, never married. The disciples were all men…” said the musician, highlighting the implicit homosexual aspect in biblical narratives.

The singer, known for addressing spiritual themes in his work, went further and commented on the erotic burden present in religious images:

Christian iconography is very sexual. It is erotic. Just look at Catholic art over the centuries, especially in the baroque – it’s all very carnal, sensual, full of naked bodies. ”

He said he always welcomed this perspective: “I always felt that my relationship with God is intimate and sensual. The sacraments are this – a physical engagement with the divine.”

Stevens still used the Eucharist as an example of the intensity of this relationship:

You are literally eating the flesh and drinking the blood of God. There is no more erotic than that. If you’re a vampire, this is the supreme erotic experience. ”

Sufjan Recently gave a preview of the next 10th anniversary edition of his album Carrie & Lowellwith the demo “Death with Dignity”.
