In December 2019, the band announced the return of John Fruscianteguitarist of the group since the beginning of their career.

“We announce, with great excitement and a full heart, that John Frusciante is rejoining our group. Thank you,” wrote the Red Hot Chili Peppers in a publication made at the time.

John Frusciante explained reasons for returning to Red Hot Chili Peppers in 2009, during tour of the album Stadium Arcadium (2006).

“It was a certain soul-searching that I did. It felt like I had changed and grown enough as a person to the point that I felt like it would be nice to have another chance to do it right,” he explained in an interview with Howard Stern (via Kboing).

The musician recalled how it was to return to the band after his first departure, in 1998. New ideas for songs and for the group’s dynamics were some of the motivations: I was seeing Anthony, Flea and chad under a different gaze than the one I saw when I left; Not that any of the times I left was anything personal, but, you know, having a relationship in a band is hard.”

“You have to be in sync with four people, working as hard as they work, going where they go, doing what they do, almost thinking what they think. It’s an intense thing to do, and I’ve found for myself that I needed to get it out of my head and try to figure out who I was as a person.”

When he had to go out for the second time, Frustrating struggled with mental health, and other members offered no resistance to their colleague’s request: “I’ve lost my mental balance in the last two years of touring. As we continued, I went into the occult, a way to escape the touring mentality. I was an unbalanced mess,” explained to Classic Rock (via loudwire).
