From the stage to the Court: two artists and the same name at stake
The Brazilian music scene has just won another chapter of soap opera. Nattan, the name of art of Natanael Cesário Dos Santos and Natanzinho Lima are in a ferocious dispute that ended at the National Institute of Industrial Property, the Inpi.
The reason? The use of the art name “Nattanzinho”, which today is officially recorded on behalf of Nattan, but that Natanzinho Lima claims to use more time.
Confusion is not only a matter of artistic vanity, but of the law and value of the brand.
In competitive phonographic market times, in which the name bears not only identity, but contracts, tours, authorized products and followers on social networks, being the “true” Nattanzinho can mean very expressive figures.
On the one hand there is Nattan, owner of the official registration in the INPI and, therefore, with commercial and artistic rights on the trademark. On the other hand, Natanzinho Lima tries to demonstrate that he used the name long before the record and which should therefore have the priority for continuous use and the previous topic legally known as “right to precedence”.
The process is still in progress and awaits the examination of the merit of the accusations made by both sides. In the meantime, the two artists normally follow their agendas, with concerts scheduled in Brazil, faithful fans and active presence on social networks.
Natanzinho Lima states that her use of the art name precedes the record made by Nattan, who, if tried, can transform the balance in his favor. However, the formal property currently belongs to Nattan, which strengthens its legal position in this moment of the process.
The controversy, although apparently technical, raises an important question in the artistic environment: the professionalization of careers and the care of the protection of names, brands and visual identities. In a universe where the personal brand is as relevant as vocal talent, having a tuned legal team can be strategic as a good support band.
Nattanzinho: From São João to the Inpi file
While inpi does not give one last word on the case, fans follow the situation curiously and, of course, a little confusion. After all, both have similar trajectories, conversation styles and even common fans. In a country where Forró and Pantry are increasing, it is not exaggerated to say that this name applies gold.
Regardless of the result, the episode is a warning for the new artists: recording the name of art is more than bureaucracy, it is a strategic step in the construction of a solid career. And in this case, the stage could also be the same, but only one will win in the final titles.
For now, music does not stop. And not even the controversy.
