Banda makes a unique presentation in SP as part of Balaclava Fest’s special program, which celebrates its 15th edition with support from Vans
In a feat that should leave fans of emo, punk and indie nostalgic in ecstasy, the Balaclava Records brings to Brazil, for the first time, one of the most cultured bands of the 90’s alternative scene: the Cap’n jazz. The presentation takes place on November 8, Saturday, at Cine Joia, in São Paulo, as part of the special warm -up program for the 15th edition of Balaclava Fest. Tickets are now available on the website of Enter and also in person, without convenience rate, in the Takkø Coffee.
The coming of the group marks not only a historical moment for the Brazilian independent circuit, but also reaffirms the role of Balaclava As one of the most relevant creative forces of the current scene, responsible for connecting niche artists to new audiences with sharp consistency and curatorship. This time, the seal joined forces with the Vanswhich debuts as a sponsor of the festival.
Exclusively for the Rolling Stone Brazil, Fernando Dottafounding partner of Balaclava Recordscommented on the meaning of the coming of the band:
Bringing Cap’n Jazz to Brazil is one of those dreams that always seemed distant, almost impossible. The band was fundamental in the musical formation of many of us, even having such a short career. It influenced the national and gringo bands we heard in our teens and made the head of various music scenes around us, Hardcore, Emo, Indie guys. It will be a very special night for the history of Balaclava. And have vans as a partner at this time and at the festival reinforces the connection between our brands. It is very important to be a brand like them, who accompanies this spirit, do-you-mastery, who understands and values our audience and that identifies itself naturally with the projects.
PIETRO GIOVANELLIbrand director of VANS BRAZILalso reinforced the synergy between the festival and the brand’s philosophy:
Music has always been one of the pillars of Vans and being with a festival like Balaclava Fest reinforces our connection with the independent scene and the artists who help move this culture. We are where creativity happens, actively contributing to new connections, sounds and experiences to develop.
Cap’n jazzformed by the brothers TIM and Mike Kinsella next to Victor Villareal, Sam Zurick and Davey von BohlenIt is an almost mythical name within the American emo. With just one album released in 1995 and a short and chaotic career, the group left a disproportionate impact on their time of activity. His raw teenage poetry mix, urgency punk and free structure helped shape a new generation of bands and has defined, in an unintentional way, the sound of modern emo.
With a nervous but always inventive sound, the Cap’n jazz flirt with bands like Fugazi, Sunny Day Real Estate and The Promise Ring (of one of its members), besides sharing the same uncomplicated energy of names such as Pavement. His free and emotional style helped shape what would later be called Midwest emo, influencing intense projects like American Football even contemporary artists like CAR SEAT Headrest, Snail Mail, Phoebe Bridgers and Turnstileall, in its own way, heirs of this mixture of punk croseza with intimate confession.
Even after the early end, the legacy of the Cap’n jazz grew thanks to the later trajectories of its members, who formed equally influential projects as American Football, Owen, JOAN OF ARC and The Promise Ring. The collection launched by Jade Tree Records in 1998 gathered his rare recordings and kept alive the flame of a band that seemed to disappear in the baseboards of the story, but eventually became a reference of worship.
After long periods in silence, the group has gathered again sporadically over the last two decades. And now, with this unique presentation in Brazil, the Cap’n jazz Promises a cathartic night, which should echo both in the memories of those who lived the 90s and in the attentive ears of a new generation. A celebration of the spirit of “Do Yourself” that crosses time and that Balaclava makes a point of maintaining evidence.
