Music as it was to treat Raul Seixas in the years before death, according to a doctor

A long agony. Thus can be defined the period of more than 10 years that preceded the death of Raul Seixasone of the largest icons of Brazilian rock.

Died at age 44 on August 21, 1989, the musician went through the 1980s fighting alcoholism and other, aggravating diseases that were aggravated by alcohol abuse. In the period, he created hits and released albums, but did not always get good results, dragged on shows and went through gaps of performances.

Raul had taken the country in the 1970s, but ended the decade with serious health problems. In 1978, he underwent a removal surgery of part of the pancreas.

I should stop drinking after that, but failed. He had diabetes, took insulin and his condition was deteriorating in the next period, also marked by the singer’s depression.

Who accompanied Raul Seixas and took care of his treatments in the dark period was the doctor LUCIANO STANCKAwho spoke about the last years of the star’s life in an interview with Tiago Bittencourt (via Wiplash), journalist who reported the conversation in the book Raul who told me2017.

Stanchka and Seixas met through the singer’s entrepreneur, José Roberto Abraão. It was he, even, who was allowed to intern and remove the artist from hospitalizations.

Initially, Luciano reported how he received Raul the first time:

“In my day, when we started, he was already very bad. Surrounded by alcohol, drugs. They ask if I expected him to die like that. No, because he wasn’t that bad.”

The physical and mental health of Raul Seixas in the final years

Stagka told Bittencourt how was Raul Seixas physically and mentally in those years of deteriorated health and also revealed that the singer did not always follow medical guidelines:

“He had a thick, very swollen leg. Edema took even abdominal space. He was already wearing strap. Diabetes required strict control. Hypoglycemia was a real risk of death. He was going to die, but he was smoking.

Under these conditions, Raul Seixas presented himself for example in Goiâniaa few months before you die. It was one of several presentations that turned into fiasco.

On April 9, 1989, the crazy beauty arrived supported by two people on the stage of Rio Vermelho Gymnasiumin the capital of Goiás, and sang only four songs. It was swollen and apathetic.

The scene contrasted with that of 10 years earlier, in the 1979 show made in Goiânia, in Olympic Stadium. According to reports, Raul Seixas was visibly drunk, but the physical condition was much better.

At the same time, the doctor tells episodes in which “he accepted when he saw that it was for his good” regarding some medication or procedure to improve his condition.

Doctor found Raul Seixas dead

Luciano Stackka followed Raul Seixas’s health condition for a short time. They met in late 1988 and the singer died in August 1989. He was found dead in bed precisely by the doctor.

“I was told that he needed help. Raul was an idol of our youth. When they called me, he slept in a wheelchair, without medication. That’s how our relationship began.”

The doctor also recalled the condition of the mental health of Raul Seixas:

“He was already very depressed. But he had good times. We talked, he had lucidity. He was a unique guy.”
