Rudy Sarzo, who also played with Dio, Whitesnake and Quiet Riot, recalls one of the most infamous episodes of Black Sabbath’s eternal singer
Among several infamous episodes that marked the career of Ozzy Osbourneone stands out. In 1982, the time former singer of Black SabbathHe bit the head of a bat on stage. It was the password for him to enter the list of infamous rock characters.
Another character, not so eccentric, was there and saw everything closely. Rudy Sarzowhich played in Ozzy’s solo band between 1981 and 1982, recalled the story in an interview with Metal Hammer.
The bassist, who has also integrated Blue Öyster cult, Quiet riot, Whitesnake, Dio and other hard/heavy metal bands, recalls:
“The bat fell right in front of me on stage. I saw that thing, looked at Ozzy and pointed with the headstock from my bass, but I kept hitting head.”
At the end of the show, held in Des Moines, Ionus United StatesThe bassist found that the case had not been that simple.
He counts:
“There was an ambulance waiting for Ozzy. So I asked Sharon (Osbourne): ‘What happened?’ And she replied, ‘Ah, Ozzy bit a bat. And we couldn’t find him because he spat back to Pit ‘. So they had to take him to the emergency room. “

In 2022, at the time of the 40th anniversary of this bizarre episode, Ozzy told Rolling Stone USA which motivated him to bite the head of the bat:
“I thought it was a rubber bat. I took it, put it in my mouth, chewed and bit, being the clown I am.”
The result? Vaccines and more vaccines not to get sick:
“Bats are the biggest anger transmitters in the world. I had to go to the hospital later, and they started giving me anger vaccines. I had to have one in every buttock and had to take every night.”
Black Sabbath farewell – and Ozzy
This Saturday, 5, Ozzy will say goodbye to the stage. He performs at a solo show and also with Black Sabbath at the event Back to the beginningwhich will mark the scene departure from the band that founded Heavy Metal.
THE Back to the beginning will be held in Villa Parkin Birminghamin England. There will be transmission through the Official Festival website.
