Rock and Roll Festival captained by Luiz Carlini at Tokio Marine Hall brought names Jorge Ben Jor, Frejat, Paulo Ricardo, among others
Forbidden fruit (1975) is one of the most acclaimed albums – if not the most – by record artist in record sales in Brazil, Rita Leenext to Tutti Frutti. By itself, it would be reason to celebrate its 50th anniversary of launch with a special show, which was done last Wednesday, 9, at Tokio Marine Hall, in São Paulo. But there are additional reasons that made the party even more special.
Rita left us in May 2023 at the age of 75 after a hard battle against cancer. Fortunately, it was very honored in life. After his departure, his timeless work gained even more strength, with different taxes on recorded and live music. Reviewing and honoring their songs is also helping to ensure that they follow and reaching different audiences and generations, even in the absence of their main guardian.

The fact that Tutti Frutti follows active is, moreover, a source of celebration. With the original guitarist Luiz Carlini In charge, the group became, as well as much of Rita’s solo career, a “family business”: the musician is accompanied by his wife, Sol Ribeiroin vocal, and the son, Roy Carlinialso on the six string instrument. Complete the training Mario Testoni (keyboard), Geraldo Vieira (low), Lucas Tagliari Miranda (battery), in addition to the backing vocals of Paula Korte and the brothers Gilberto and RUBENS NARDOinvolved with Forbidden fruit Tocally Carlini.

And the very union of guest stars serves as another reason to celebrate. The event at Tokio Marine Hall brought none other than Jorge Ben Jor, at the top of her 86 years, for a special participation. Frejat, Paulo Ricardo, Andreas Kisser, Supla, Wolf and Marisa Orthall influenced by Rita and many of them even played their songs throughout their career, composed the starry cast also present on stage. Among those previously announced, the only absence was that of Zélia Duncan.

The Show
Interestingly, it took a while until the audience willingly/tables was taken to the repertoire of Forbidden fruit. The set started about 15 minutes after the time released with two instruments, “Sleep Walk” (Original from Santo & Johnny Farina) and “Carlini’s Boogie”in which Luiz Carlini paraded his ability in a lap steel guitar – or Hawaiian guitar – presented by none other than Frejat, one of the guests of the night. Also playing the role of Master of Ceremonies of the Night, Luiz explains that the 1975 album has only nine tracks, so they would need to bring songs from other works by Tutti Frutti to compose the repertoire.

With the entrances on the stage of Sol Ribeiro, Paula Korte and the Brothers Nardo, the group played “Rock Corista”track that opens the disc INPUTS AND FLAGS (1976), in version bringing good soils extended to the end. The groovada “With the mouth in the world (ticthic)” and the cadence “Flying Disk” They pleased, like the previous ones, but the show only began to take off even with the entrance of the first guest: Jorge Ben Jor, singing “My girl”composition of it recorded and consecrated by the Mutant Still in the 1960s. At the top of his 86 years, the icon of our music was lavishing vigor not only in front of the microphone, but also in the guitar, risking soils alongside Carlini – who, in the end, admitted: “I can’t believe it just happened.”

Seventh music of the night, “The Touch”finally, introduced the repertoire of Forbidden fruit And it was followed by “Dance not to dance”track that opens the album and was acclaimed already facing its cabaret introduction to the piano. “Piracy”one of the best of the night, had the only participation not announced previously: Lee marcuccioriginal bassist of Tutti Frutti and co -author of the song itself. With all respect for the also great Geraldinho, the founder of the Taxi radio It could have been a little more on stage.

At the height of “Luz del Fuego”next track, the public already seemed actually immersed. Moment for Carlini to risk the vocals in the typically Stonean “What a madness”only night song from You know the best medicine (1980), Tutti Frutti’s only album without Rita. Following, another guest in the microphone and also on the six strings: Frejat, by “Postcard”, “There I go” (Exclusive track of the novel’s soundtrack The scream and absent from studio records) and “Mom Nature”the first two with Carlini again on the Hawaiian guitar. The formerRed baron Perhaps it was the best -set guest, to the point of actually seeking a member of the group.

Interestingly, this context is left to perhaps the most unusual participation of the night: Marisa Orth, who surprisingly sent well beside the sun “This Roque Enter” and “Miss Brasil 2000”it entitled to singers to emerge with costumes and trees of misses – and rival them. On the other hand, Lobão seemed not to have been the best choice for “Black sheep”even if he has already re -recorded it in the live Lino, Sexy & Brutal (2012). Undeniably, the musician offered a very particular interpretation to the greatest hit of Forbidden fruit; Just didn’t fit. When Carlini’s historic solo entered, he sounded like everything entered the tracks again.

In the three final songs of the set, Tutti Frutti featured Andreas Kisser on the guitar. “Gardens of Babylon” It also brought Supla, which, equipped from its characteristic vocabulary, extracted the most energetic reactions of the public. “Forbidden Fruit”the song, reserved the public the final guest, Paulo Ricardo, here assuming vocals and also harmonica. The closing with “Now you just miss you” It even started only with Paulo and Andreas, but already in the first chorus had a welcome “invasion” on the stage of all the guests. Good party is messy party.

In addition to the weight of the honored work and the already commented special appearances, the treatment given by Tutti Frutti to the repertoire should be highlighted. Respectful execution of songs not just Forbidden fruitbut from other albums, it was a positive point. Only when necessary was there additional weight dose, usually offered by the additional Roy guitar, as skilled as the father. Sol, one of the most pronounced singers in the country when it comes to playing Rita’s work, gave a show not only of performance, but also of humility, when checking full space to so many guests. And if Luiz Carlini served as master of ceremonies, Mario Testoni, also historical for working with the House of MachinesHe played a role of real conductor – and it was the one who positively “threatened” the spotlight of the group and guest leader.

The expectation, now, is for the announcement of more shows in celebration of the 50 years of forbidden fruit. THE Rolling Stone BrazilCarlini said the plan is to present the presentation in other cities and bringing local guests. May the celebrations extend. This album deserves it.
