Last Friday, the 1st, Harry Styles released his newest song “As It Was”, marking the beginning of his “Harry’s House” era. The track surprised fans (in a positive way, of course), who received a new style of music from the singer.

But, after all, who is behind this track? In addition to Harry, the songwriters and producers Kid Harpoon and Tyler Johnson, who are already super savvy when it comes to hits, helped bring this track to the real world. So, let’s know more about one of them?

Who is Kid Harpoon?

Born Thomas Edward Percy Hull, Tom Hull — or now known as Kid Harpoon — has been in music since the 2000s. In 2006, the hitherto singer-songwriter dropped his first single “The River, The Ocean, The Pearl”. In the following years, he continued to release his EPs and released his debut album “Once” in 2009 to critical success.

In 2020, he was named Music Week’s Songwriter of the Year. Too much success!

But, of course, Kid Harpoon, who is now also a producer, has made a name for himself by collaborating with big-name artists, which I’m sure you’ve heard. So, let’s get to know the hits already composed by Kid Harpoon?

The man behind the hits

Are you a folk fan? Indie rock? So, you’ve found the right composer for you.

Before working with Harry, Kid Harpoon collaborated on great songs from the phenomenon. Florence + the Machine, mainly in the album “Ceremonials”. Her name is behind tracks like “Leave My Body”, “Never Let Me Go” and the well-known and acclaimed “Shake It Out”, which earned a nomination for the Ivor Novello, an award dedicated to songwriters.

In 2012, another hit with Florence Welchbut this time next to Calvin Harris: “Sweet Nothing”.

Continuing with the folk wave, he composed the acoustic hit “it could be better”, by the English singer Lewis Watson.

Other singers who have already had his help when composing were: birdythe band HAIM, Years & Years, James Bay, Aurora, king princess, Portugal The Man and even Lea Michelle. You could get more or less what his typical sound is like, right?

More recently, we have seen his name on “Roses” and on most of the tracks on the “Wonder” album, released in 2020. More precisely 11 of the 14 songs on the original album. It’s easy?

And Harry Styles?

Well, Kid Harpoon is no stranger to him either. In 2017, he collaborated on two tracks on the newly soloist’s first album — “Carolina” and “Sweet Creature.”

By the way, in “Carolina”, from the album “Harry Styles”, we already had the collaboration of the iconic trio of “As It Was”, with the participation of Tyler Johnson. The same applies to some tracks on the “Fine Line”, such as the first single “Lights Up”, “Golden”, “Watermelon Sugar”, “Cherry”, “To Be So Lonely” and, finally, “Fine Line”. Not all tracks on the last album received this power trio, but we can say that the work and influence were significant, right?

By the way, for hardcore fans, know that “Medicine” was also written by him. Just hit, you can talk!

And, finally, we arrived at the era of “As It Was”, which certainly shows the style of music that Kid Harpoon likes to compose together with his partners. I fear a clear indication of indie rock and a good folk influence from the beats. So, did you love this producer as much as we do?
