Presentation at Casa Rockambole, last Saturday, 19, concluded tour in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the artist’s most consistent album
*Originally published in TO NO GRADE || At a given moment of your show at Rockambole housein São Paulo, last Saturday, 19, Esteban Tavares promoted a self -phase by recognizing that La Muerte de Tu Life (2015), his second solo album whose 10th anniversary won a tour in tour, was born “under pressure”. When he announced at the time a crowdfunding project to make the album viable, only two of his 13 songs were ready. “It looks like it worked”he finished.
There was a foundation on the pat on the back. By that time, the singer, songwriter and guitarist had already made virtually all present singing the sharp verses of songs as “January”, “To be” and “Chacarera da Saudade”. The gaucho of Camaquã knew that the night in the charming and full (but not crowded) Rockamobole House, responsible for completing the aforementioned commemorative tour of the album, was just another chapter of a synergistic relationship with his audience – the same as a decade earlier, he allowed him to La Muerte de Tu Life be realized. Before, the artist had already recognized: if it wasn’t for fans, he would not even have a budget to record the material.

The 2015 album was the second step of a solo career that, for difficult reasons to explain, was relegated to the underground – a very different space from the one occupied two decades ago by Fresnoband that brought Esteban as bassist and supporter of support between 2006 and 2012. One of the reasons for reduced recognition can reside, precisely, in betting on a much more diverse sound than that explored by his former group, one of the Baluartes of Brazilian Emocore. In the solo catalog, the musician goes from emo to also melancholy blues, almost always in more cadenced rhythms, and splashes complementary references that transit from milonga, by the presence of accordion (or harmonica, as they call it in the south) as a complement and not protagonist, even more alternative/indie genres, noticed in “What doesn’t come” From the punctual use of more loaded guitar effects and even slightly pop beats.

It works, as he himself recognized on the stage. Whether for the celebration itself or for recognizing the strength of the honoree album, Tavares offered the public from São Paulo a repertoire with almost full execution of La Muerte de Tu Life. Ten of the 13 tracks of the thematically vulnerable – and soundly consistent – 2015 work entered the setlist; “January”it is said, it was still reprized at the end of the exclusive set of the album. Of this section, stood out:
- The aforementioned emo-bluesy “Chacarera da Saudade”with the protagonist flying in the soils in his burning Stratocaster Clara;
- “Tuesdays can be revealed”probably the song that drew the most enthusiastic reactions from the audience;
- and “Letter to the disinterested”of more direct lyricism and until then the fourth track to reference cigarettes and the act of smoking (by way of curiosity, there was a fifth mention in “Monday” later).
Standing the tribute to his second solo album, Esteban shared the rest of the set time into two moments. First, he performed a pair of even more melancholy songs alone – “Berlin Nights” and “World”this original from April. Then brought back the competent band formed by Wysrah Moraes (low; curiously touching with a broken right arm), Rodrigo Veiga (keyboards and accordion) and Eduardo Machado (battery) for a more focused closing Esteban Adi! (2012), your first album away from group. If not in a message, at least in sound there is a more cherishing proposal in “Sophia”, “Monday” and “Pianinho”. The closing with “I feel a lot of blues” had harmonica (mouth) assumed by the guest César Lascanogaucho musician responsible for the competent but little memorable opening presentation.

Resume La Muerte de Tu Life For a live celebration sounded beyond mere nostalgic movement. It served to show how Esteban evolved as a composer and performer and, in particular, the impact of his work on the part of Fresno on a restricted but faithful entourage of fans. Perhaps you have to reach different audiences, as the show at Casa Rockambole clearly deserved to have been seen by more people. However, referenced “Letter to the disinterested”I will not be the educated rude who wants to educate the artist.
