Band was boycotted during an presentation at Ozzfest 2005, the singer’s event, after provocative statements by vocalist Bruce Dickinson
It was slow but did not fail. THE Iron Maiden published a tribute to Ozzy Osbournedied last Tuesday, 22, on their social networks. The situation had even generated fans complaints, outraged by the band’s silence – broken only on Wednesday, 23.
In the publication, Maiden shared an image recorded by his official photographer, John McMurtrie. The caption states:
“Everyone involved with Iron Maiden send their sincere condolences to Sharon and the Osbourne family for the sad announcement of Ozzy’s death. He helped shape the heavy metal as we know it and we will be forever grateful to Black Sabbath for walking the path that so many followed. Rest in peace, Ozzy Osbourne. ”

Throughout Tuesday, 22nd, netizens charged a post from Iron Maiden, which, unlike several other rock and heavy metal icons, had not published anything in tribute to Osbourne. It was speculated that silence would be related to the disagreement between Sharon, widow and businesswoman of the artist, and the group, especially his vocalist, Bruce Dickinson. Remember below.
The bullshit
In 2005, Maiden was one of the main attractions of Ozzfestthe traveling festival promoted by Ozzy and Sharon between 1996 and 2018. Black Sabbath, Black Label Society, Slipknot, Velvet Revolver, In Flames, Mudvayne, Rob Zombie, Killswitch Engage, Mastodon, Arch Enemyamong others, they were also part of the lineup.
Who gave reason to the confusion, at first, was Dickinson. His band performed 24 shows within the shared tour – and according to reports, on several occasions, the singer made controversial comments to the audience especially to the reality show “The Osbournes”starred by the family that organized the event. It is worth remembering that the final episode had been shown in MTV shortly before.
Sharon said to Billboard About what happened:
“It was just the singer. The other guys in the band are great people. No problem. But when you have an envious singer for the main attraction, it never goes well.”
In the final show to feature Iron, in the American city of San Bernardino, on August 20, the Osbournes matriarch simply organized a shower of eggs towards Bruce. He told what he did:
“I had been treatment against California cancer and all the nurses I met during my chemotherapy year came to the show and said, ‘We can do something for you?’. And I said, ‘Yes, you can.’ I filled them with bean cans, vegetables, eggs and said, ‘Shoot the singer.’ And that’s what they did. You will be covered with tomato soup in Los Angeles. You are making money to be on this tour while disrespecting those who give it to her every night before the fans.
Bruce Dickinson’s sabotage and reaction
Even before the “bombardment”, the Iron Maiden show was the target of sabotage. Lights and sound were harmed at various times and the band had to withdraw. Sharon even took the stage shortly thereafter to try to explain what had just happened.
When eggs and other things began to be thrown during the execution of “The Trooper”Bruce Dickinson’s reaction was as follows:
“You may have noticed some stupid sages who decided they would go to the supermarket and buy some damn eggs to play in us. I think they thought it would be funny. But this is an English flag p*rra and we don’t run, your idiots! If you see someone throwing some m*rda in this band and they raise their arm, make sure that when you go down, you are in two pieces?”
The public view
Shawn “Clown” CrahanSlipknot percussionist watching the show and soon realized that something strange was happening. It was not long before it was a fight between the characters already mentioned.
“Slipknot played at that show. I was very close to the front of the stage and saw it all start to happen. I saw people coming out and could feel that something was happening. And I felt: ‘There are a lot of English things happening here’ [em referência à nacionalidade de Ozzy, Sharon e Bruce]. It seemed very personal and very serious. I thought, ‘I probably shouldn’t be here …’ and left. ”
Two decades later
The situation is commented to this day by Sharon Osbourne whenever there is the opportunity, referring to Bruce Dickinson as “that little man” or “scoundrel.” Ozzy talks less about the subject, but continues to support his wife. He says:
“He [Bruce] He climbed on stage, went to the public every night and said bad things. It was disrespectful. ‘I can’t take these lights from the c*railo’ and all that. If you don’t want to do the show, just say, ‘I don’t want to do the show.’ But it’s very stupid if you accept and all you do is complain. ”
Black Sabbath’s original vocalist also commented on what happened to The Quietus (via Blabberouth) in 2010:
“Unfortunately, the rest of the band had to suffer: I believe they were angry with him. But that’s wrong: I never even talked to the guy … No, one, one night they were about to go on stage, I didn’t know what was happening, then I told them: ‘I have a good show,’ but I don’t like it all. It’s an asshole.
In turn, Bruce Dickinson prefers to put hot cloths. In 2017, to NME (via Blabberouth), Iron Maiden’s singer emphasized that his problem is only with reality shows.
“It’s a complete storm in a glass of water. I grew up listening to Sabbath’s beginning with Ozzy. Ozzy and Sabbath are icons, so that’s it, the end of the story. The fact that I don’t like reality shows … Well, I don’t give the Kardashians a shit too.”
Ozzy Osbourne even claimed that the bassist Steve Harris apologized for Bruce Dickinson’s behavior at the time. However, Maiden’s own leader denied. After that, the parties directly involved in the conflict did not meet, nor did they portray.
