Marcelo Tofani opens solo album work with “Certificado”

Bee Gees inspiration was the starting point for the single, the first of the new album that comes out in November

It is with an eye on the past and two feet on the future that Marcelo Tofani inaugurates the work of his first solo album with the single “Certificado”. Released this Tuesday (9), the track marks the beginning of the trajectory of tofani post-neon rose – and also solidifies the relationship with the seal The Gangin djongawith whom he signed at the end of 2021.

The “thin” vocal, as mentioned tofani at the beginning of the video, he gives the greatest reference of the musician from Minas Gerais to the new track, which emerged after contact with a documentary by the Bee Gees:

“’Certify’ came about after I watched a documentary by Bee Gees and I freaked out a lot about them, their sound, their trajectory and not just them, but the pop artists of the late 1970s, early 1980s, when they were at their peak.”

Composed and produced in partnership with Gabriel Moulin, “Certificado” turned out to be the last to enter the new disc. Chosen to open the works of the new work, she would bring within herself the “mixtureba”, which is synonymous with Marceloaccording to himself.

“First of all I’m a pop artist. Pop is not a rhythm, pop is a genre that absorbs totally different rhythms. That’s my greatest pleasure in music.”

In the clip, released this Wednesday (10th) and directed by Caio Vieira, Marcelo opts for a different path from other videos of his: instead of a linear plot, as in “Não Beijei Nobody”, here he appears in the same studio. The “subjective” choice would be, according to him, “for making a video that conveys sensations through aesthetics, but that leaves more open interpretations”. Check out:

From the new disc, tofani little delivery – in addition to the album’s forecast, for November, the singer limits himself to saying that the work brings more than one participation (“I won’t say how many”). Of the feats, it only delivers the com MC Anjim“the funk guy from BH and owner of one of the most fucked up and blown songs of 2021, ‘Bala Love’”.

Rolling Stone Brasil: “Certificado” opens the works of their first album. What concepts did you try to bring to the album and how do they reflect on the new track?

Marcelo Tofani: Before making this record, I was very lost and frying in a thing that goes like this: there is a maxim in music and advertising that if you don’t have a very established target audience and if you do something very broad, very diverse, people don’t identify and you end up not hitting anyone, you know?

When I entered the studio to make this record, I decided to turn on the ”fuck you” switch and make the song with my heart, the way I wanted to do it, whether in an X or Y rhythm, you know why? First of all I’m a pop artist. Pop is not a rhythm, pop is a genre that absorbs totally different rhythms. That is my greatest pleasure in music. I’m an artist who listens and absorbs references from different styles and who can’t, even if he wants to, get into the box of the genre. That ended up being the concept of the album. Even the name of the album has everything to do with it, but I can’t speak yet. ”Certificado”, this first single, reflects this a lot, the mix that is Marcelo Tofani. This pop artist who absorbs things from different places and who collaborates with artists from different genres, making kind of unimaginable bridges. I think this is very much a thing of our generation. The same person who listens to pop divas, listens to Pabllo Vittar, listens to rap and also stomps. I am a reflection of that.

Rolling Stone Brasil: We still remember the release of ‘Não Beijei Meus’, which was a reggaeton celebrated in 2021. Since then you signed with AQuadrilha and now it’s a new album – how was that period and what this turn represents for your music?

Marcelo Tofani: Having signed with AQuadrilha is one of the symptoms of me being the personification of random riding. I’m the guy who creates musical bridges between places that sometimes didn’t exist. For example, I am one of the only artists from A’ Quadrilha who is not a rapper, and at the same time Djonga and I have been partners since the beginning of our careers, we always did things together, he was a very important guy, not only in my career -solo, but also in Pink Neon. I really like this feeling of creating these bridges between places that had everything to connect, but which are incredibly not in touch. It’s very my vibe.

Rolling Stone Brasil: ‘Certificado’ was the last track on the new album, yes? How did it come to you and why did you choose it as your first single?

Marcelo Tofani: “Certificado” came about after I watched a Bee Gees documentary and I freaked out a lot about them, their sound, their trajectory and not only them, but the pop artists of the late 1970s, early 1980s, when they were at their peak. I really wanted a sound that brought this nostalgia for the tracks of the time, using my current references and all my baggage, as if it were a huge umbrella of references and ”Certificado” was chosen a lot for these reasons, because it synthesizes this reference blender. The same night I saw the Bee Gees documentary, I started producing the song on my cell phone, at home, and then took it to the studio to finish the production and composition together with Gabriel Moulin, my producer. The track entered the album in the 48th of the second half and we fell in love, felt a very strong stop for the sound and felt that it summed up all this roll.

Rolling Stone Brasil: Your videos usually have some kind of plot. Is this the case? What’s the story here and how was his production?

Marcelo Tofani: Well, I’m an artist who brings a plot and a story well in the can in the clips. This time, the director, Caio Vieira and I, chose to make a video that conveyed sensations through aesthetics, but that left more open interpretations for those watching. It will be a more subjective stop.

Rolling Stone Brasil: Does the new album already have a date to arrive? Any cameos, what can you tell us about?

Marcelo Tofani: The album is scheduled to come out in November and comes with more than one participation, I won’t say how many, but there are more than one. I can say that one of these is MC Anjim, who is a funk guy from BH and owner of one of the most fucked up and blown songs of 2021, ”Bala Love”. I’m passionate about his work, I think he’s a badass guy and a badass artist.
