On August 28, 1993, Bruce Dickson made the last show of his first ticket at Iron Maiden. However, it is correct to say that the vocalist had been dissatisfied with the band’s direction for a long time – at least since 1986.

After all, what led to the exit of Bruce?

A sum of factors contributed to the vocalist’s stampede. However, the preponderant reason was the musical discontentconforming the vocalist himself revealed his autobiography, What does this button? (2017), launched in Brazil as Bruce Dickinson: an autobiography.

Commenting on his departure from Maiden, the singer said, referring to the end of the album tour Fear of the Darklaunched in 1992 (Transcript via LUDWIRE):

“We were coming home, and it was more a self -satisfied success. I had tried to express my concerns about the sound and production of our albums, the presumption of perfection, and the lack of honest criticism within the band. Everyone looked at me as if I had driven. Maybe I had, or perhaps we were in the slow trajectory of a luxurious creative extinction.”

Almost a decade of dissatisfaction

The truth is that Bruce Dickinson had been wringing his nose for the band’s records since SOMEWHERE IN TIME (1986), when it did not even contribute to the creative process. Wastened by the insane rhythm of tours, the singer even suggested some songs that were discarded for sounding too light.

With the exception of Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (1988), that the singer usually praises and pointing out as one of two favorite works, the following works did not please him either – No Prayer for the Dying (1990) and the one already mentioned Fear of the Dark.

Much of this is due to production. From No Prayer for the Dyingthe Iron Maiden began to record at the mobile studio installed within a barn owned by Steve Harris.

Bruce never approved the sound of that place. Their rusts with the bassist came to an impractical level, including musical disagreements to composition levels.

Bruce Dickinson Solo and Iron Maiden without him

In 1990, Dickinson had already released his first solo album, Tattooed Millionairewith a sound totally different from that practiced by the iron maiden.

Still during the tour of Fear of the Darkhe reported his departure from the band. His focus became a solo career. Blaze Bayley assumed the post of vocalist of the Iron Maiden.

With Blaze on vocals, Maiden released two albums – The x Factor (1995) and Virtual XI (1998) – who did not fall in favor of fans. In 1999, the return of Bruce Dickinson was announced, as well as the guitarist Adrian Smith.
