Album with 14 tracks hits platforms this Tuesday (7) and features appearances by Criolo, Don L, Major RD and Giovani Cidreira
Uriah launches this Tuesday (7) FROWNhis new album that marks a definitive turning point in his artistic trajectory. After consolidating with the work “FURY” and “HER MIND”the singer and songwriter from Minas Gerais presents a dense project, full of religious symbolism, Afro-Brazilian references and questions about identity, freedom and resistance.
The album’s title comes from the grotesque figure carved in wood, traditionally used on vessels and gates to ward off evil spirits. In Afro-Brazilian culture, the frown is linked to Exuorixá considered the messenger between the material and spiritual world. It is precisely this bridge between different planes that Uriah builds on the album’s 14 tracks, including three interludes narrated by Marcinha do Corinthowhich guide listeners on a journey about freedom, revolt and the power of love.
The album’s narrative works like a journey. In the first interlude, Uriah presents the idea of a false, inaccessible freedom. The second delves deeper into the topic through revenge as a possible path. The third and final interlude closes the cycle with the symbolic return to Ethiopia, representing the return to the origin, to Mother Earth, where freedom is full and true. “These interludes connect directly with the central theme of the album. They function as points of breathing and reflection, but also as guides to understand the larger narrative of the work”, explains the artist.
The digital album cover was created by Isaac de Souza Salesa visual artist from São Paulo who works with Afro-surrealism. His work absorbs the plurality of the African diaspora through music, cinema, literature and oral history, seeking answers for the future in ancestry and creating new utopian and dystopian references. The creative direction of the visuals was in charge of Odefollowing an Afro-surrealist narrative that makes allusions to earthly bodies like Josephine Baker and Sarah Baartmanin addition to orixás and gods such as I hope, Yemanjá, Iansã, Horus and Ptah.
FROWN features four special appearances: Creole in “God”, Giovani Cidreira in “Heritage”, Major RD in “Voice of Brazil” and Don L in “Patience”. The album’s musical production was mainly led by Maffalda, Gorky and Shipwith a mix of Rafael Fadul and mastering of Arthur Luna. The interludes were written by the French historian Guillaume Blanc-Mariannespecialist in the history of photography and researcher at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.
Born in Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, Uriah currently has more than 460 thousand monthly listeners on Spotify and more than 56 million views on YouTube. He began his career releasing covers in 2018 and consolidated himself with hits such as “Devil”, “Blossom”, “Rolling” and “Dangerous”.
With FROWN the artist consolidates a new phase of her career, more mature and connected to the Afro-Brazilian roots that permeate her identity.
