English DJ Nicky Horne has revealed recordings of a conversation with the musician five years after Lennon’s death. At the time the singer also spoke of having almost discarded the album ‘Walls and Bridges’
John Lenon he was afraid of being monitored while ruling Nixon and almost canceled one of his solo albums, Walls and bridgesfrom 1974. This was revealed in a “lost” interview given by the former Beatle five years after his death to the English DJ Nicky Horne.
The musician would have turned 85 this Thursday, the 9th, and, given the date, Horne decided to provide more details on the conversation that took place on the Boom Radio station in the United Kingdom. The DJ was 24 years old at the time and had gone to New York specifically to interview Lennon. Horne revealed that he was nervous about the occasion, as he would come face to face with his favorite Beatle, but that, once he arrived at the Dakota Building, where the singer lived with Yoko OnoLennon said she made him some chocolate chip cookies.
The musician then spoke of his distrust of his phone being intercepted by the CIA: at the time Horne was called “naive” for believing the singer. Years later, however, the American Freedom of Information Act revealed that, in fact, Lennon had his phone monitored, he was being followed and the American government wanted to deport him.
At the time, the newspaper reported, the singer associated his anti-war activism with persecution The Guardian. “I know the difference between the phone being normal when I pick it up and every time I pick it up there’s a lot of noise,” he said.
Lennon also commented on occasions when he suspected he was being followed by a car. “I opened the door and there were some guys standing across the street. I got in the car and they followed me in the car, not hiding,” he said. According to him, the persecution also occurred on other rock stars, such as Mick Jagger AND Keith Richards.
Of almost discarding Walls and bridgesthe musician stated that he “couldn’t bear to listen to” the recorded tapes of the album. However, he was encouraged by friends to release the album. Walls and bridges it received a gold record for its sales success and was written during a brief separation between Lennon and Yoko.
Lennon was murdered at the age of 40 by a fan on December 8, 1980 in the Dakota Building. He did not hide his “feud” with Nixon and also released several songs about the former president of the United States, such as Give me some truth AND Instant Karma! (We all shine).
