The first episode of the series was shown at the Rio Festival and revealed to the public the psychological and challenging approach to one of today’s most anticipated true crimes, which explores the story of notorious criminals in a famous prison in São Paulo
Tremembéan original series from Amazon Prime Video, had its premiere on Wednesday night (8) on Rio Festival 2025 with the screening of the first episode, which packed the Cine Odeon and revealed to the public the psychological and challenging approach of one of the true crimes most anticipated of our time, which explores the story of notorious criminals in a famous prison in São Paulo.
The cast, including Marina Ruy Barbosa (Justice), Felipe Simas (The Adventures of José & Durval), Bianca Comparato (3%) and Kelner Macêdo (Electric Body), was present to celebrate the production. Marinafrom the stage, highlighted the collective effort: “We are a small part of a big project, because there were 1,700 people working on this project. And we will launch this series here, on the 31st, there will be 5 [episódios] now, not only here in Brazil, but around the world.”
The dark side and the acting methodology
The screenwriter and journalist Ulisses Campbellauthor of the books that gave rise to the series, explained the public’s fascination with the genre true crime: “I think it captivates the public a lot because this story is about society. These people, they committed crimes, but they are still human like us. They affect a lot what you are capable of doing, the limits that the penal code imposes on you. I think it’s this dark side of the human being that fascinates people.”
The complexity of interpreting this dark side was one of the cast’s greatest challenges. The actor Kelner Macêdo revealed the obsession with delving deeper into human nature and its weaknesses: “The crime is very close, it is not far. All it takes is five minutes of complete loss of control and you can commit a crime.” He highlighted the social importance of the series being able to reflect on the penitentiary system and society itself.
To compose such a controversial character, the actor Anselmo Vasconcelos (The Diarist) sought help from a body trainer, who helped him “Locate in his body where his psychopathy was“.The series is a “interpretation of interpretation“, in which the character “pretend to be sick“.
Challenges and reflections on the profession
The actor Felipe Simas reflected on the experience of acting in the series, which led him to “different heart places“, but without differentiating the character from other roles. He stated that, for him, all hearts “They beat the same way, the blood flows the same way“. João Pedro Mariano (Baby) commented on the versatility required when playing a character who walks in heels, something new in his career, as an actor who needs to give “face to face“.
By taking such a Brazilian story to the big screen, the production reinforces the power of national audiovisual. The actors Kelner Macêdo and João Pedro Mariano highlighted that the series brings an important reflection to the public and that art can fulfill its role in provoking thought and opening discussions.
