Coming to theaters this Halloween Eve, The Flesh Itself proves that national terror can, indeed, be very effective. The new feature film Ian SBFproduced by Young Nerduses the dark setting of the Paraguayan War, which took place between 1864 and 1870, to create a dense and claustrophobic psychological thriller, in which paranoia is the true protagonist.
The film follows three deserting soldiers (Jorge Guerreiro, George Sauma and Pierri Baitelli) who, fleeing the horror of the battlefield, find refuge in an isolated house on the border. There, they are welcomed by a mysterious farmer (Luiz Carlos Persy) and an enigmatic young woman (Jade Mascarenhas). What should be salvation, of course, turns into the beginning of a new nightmare.
Forget the jump scares easy. The biggest asset of The Flesh Itself It’s being what I call a “pop film”, and that’s an immense compliment. The script, signed by SBF, Alexandre Ottoni and Deive Pazosinvests in long dialogues and the construction of a suffocating atmosphere. The tension comes not from monsters, but from suspicion. The film already establishes this atmosphere in its first scenes, creating an immediate suspense that leaves us uncomfortable.
The script gets it right by making all are suspicious. The Farmer acts suspiciously, speaks suspiciously, and is clearly hiding something. But the soldiers themselves are not heroes; they are exhausted, traumatized and desperate men. Their “passivity” prevents them from actively investigating the place and works as an element of realism: they are not there to solve a mystery, they are trying to survive, which makes the cabin an even more effective psychological trap.
When the horror finally turns physical, the film delivers its best sequence. There is a specific scene — anyone who watches it will know which one — that involves an amputation attempt. It’s a masterpiece of direction and tension. Ian SBF it stretches time almost unbearably, focusing on the details and the agony. It is one of the most harrowing moments of recent national terror, proving that palpable horror, when well constructed, is always more impactful.
Being a weighty addition to Brazilian cinema, The Flesh Itself it is effective and relies more on its story and atmosphere than on easy gimmicks.
