The Social Network actor revealed that the surgery is already scheduled and said that living donation should be an ‘obvious decision’

During his appearance on NBC’s Today program, this Thursday, 30th, Jesse Eisenbergactor in films such as The Social Network (2010) and The True Pain (2024), announced that he will voluntarily donate a kidney to a stranger.

The program had sponsored a blood donation drive over the summer, and asked the artist about his contribution. “I have so much blood in my veins and I feel like I should donate it,” he joked. Eisenberg. “I really enjoy doing this, and I don’t know why. I’m actually going to donate a kidney in six weeks. I’m serious,” he revealed.

Surprised, the presenter Craig Melvin praised the actor’s attitude. “This is incredible,” he commented. “It’s a big leap.” Eisenberg explained that the altruistic donation is scheduled for mid-December.

According to the National Kidney Foundationliving kidney donation allows a healthy person to donate a kidney, offering benefits such as shorter waiting time, greater compatibility with the recipient and a longer transplant duration — on average, 15 to 20 years, compared to seven to 10 years for a kidney from a deceased donor.

“It is essentially risk-free and therefore necessary,” he stated Eisenberg to TODAY.com (via People). “I think people will realize it’s an obvious decision if they have the time and inclination.”

The so-called altruistic donation — also known as non-directed donation or “good Samaritan” donation — occurs when a person donates a kidney anonymously to someone in need, without any connection to the recipient. It is different from directed donation, the most common case occurring between blood relatives (parents, siblings or children) or people with close ties, such as spouses and friends.

In the United States, approximately 5,000 kidney donations from living donors are made every year. The process is simple: the first step is to contact a transplant center for a health assessment, which includes blood, urine and imaging tests. After approval, the surgery is usually laparoscopic, a minimally invasive procedure that uses small incisions in the abdominal region to remove the kidney.

Costs for the donor’s evaluation, surgery, and follow-up appointments are covered by the recipient’s health plan. The main requirements include being at least 18 years old, not having certain medical conditions (such as high blood pressure, diabetes or cancer) and not being a smoker.

THE National Kidney Foundation It also offers an additional benefit: when a person becomes an altruistic donor, their family gains priority if any member needs a kidney transplant in the future while still alive. “The system works like this: you can indicate who you would like to be first on the list. So, for my family, there is no risk either”, explained the Eisenberg. After the procedure, most donors stay in the hospital for just one or two nights and recover completely in about four weeks.
