The Ghostface from the first film praised the return of original screenwriter Kevin Williamson, who will direct Scream 7, but commented that Scream 6 exaggerated the brutality of the scenes
The actor Matthew Lillardwho played the iconic villain Stu Macher in the first Panic (1996), believes that the horror franchise created by Wes Craven is in “a good place”, but warns that recent films may have crossed the line into violence.
In an interview with GamesRadar+, Lillard praised the return of the original screenwriter Kevin Williamsonwho will direct Scream 7but commented that Scream 6 exaggerated the brutality of the scenes. “It’s great that Kevin is back. I loved what [Tyler Gillett e Matt Bettinelli-Olpin] they were doing before, nothing against them. But I think the film was too violent”, he stated.
“I don’t think Ghostface needs a shotgun. Everything is trying to repeat what we did in the first film — that manic monologue at the end — and it’s very difficult to do that again. I hope Kevin takes the series in a new, brave and exciting direction, with other colors and pleasures.”
The comment refers to Scream 6 (2023), in which the killer Ghostface appears using a shotgun, something unprecedented in the saga. The decision, according to the directors, was designed to “make the audience raise their eyebrows” — but it didn’t please all the old school fans.
Lillard also commented that, in his view, the essence of the franchise is more linked to the suspense and satire of the genre than to excessive gore. He himself played one of the masked killers in the original film, alongside Skeet Ulrichin a plot that used knives to make crimes “more personal and visceral”.
Recently, the actor fueled rumors about the possible return of Stu Macher, suggesting in an interview with the program Drew Barrymore that his character would still be alive — although nothing has been officially confirmed.
