Tom Cruise has been a Hollywood heavyweight for nearly four decades, from his early jobs as a Foreigners Yes the color of money to his continuing career as Ethan Hunt in Mission Impossible movie. For several months, Cruise has impressed on the big screen thanks to his return of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell Top Gun: Maverick, a film that the actor basically gave the green light to simply by calling Paramount Pictures and telling the studio he was doing it. Outside of Val Kilmer’s return as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, DissidentThe cast of was made up of new faces and I had the pleasure of learning from three of the actors their favorite memories of working with the icon in the sequel.
Top Gun: Maverick I recently turned to digital platforms, and to celebrate, I spoke to Charles Parnell, who plays RADM Solomon “Warlock” Bates, the commander of the Naval Aviation Warfare Development Center and someone dating back to Pete Mitchell. Parnell chose to remember the first time he met Tom Cruise, starting with the following:
There are many fond memories of working with Tom Cruise. The first thing that comes to my mind is my first day. In a sense, it encompasses it. So my first day was a speech that Warlock gave introducing Maverick to the new students, and [Cruise] he was not supposed to be there that day. I do the speech several times in front of the camera, we do a few takes and usually everyone relaxes after I’m done because we’re going to cut there and he’ll shoot another day. I am about to leave, I see the activity behind a curtain, and it is he who gets dressed. And they say, “Do it this time, he will really come in.” The other actors didn’t know it, I introduced it. Now mind you, I hadn’t met him because I was missing the whiteboard because I was working, so today was my day to meet him. I thought I’d meet him in a few days, but he was there and we didn’t even say goodbye.
I can only imagine how surprised Charles Parnell was to learn that Tom Cruise wasn’t just showing up at the Top Gun: Maverick set a day when he shouldn’t have come, but wouldn’t even show up for a short visit; He came to play his scene. Parnell went on to describe that her first interaction with Cruise was truly fragile, even praising her co-star for how she brightened up the days of the cast and crew. In Parnell’s words:
I redid the scene, he walks as you see him in the movie and hear his footsteps, and I was wondering if that was the plan they used because they all stiffened in their chairs when they noticed someone was coming and they didn’t cut it. And then he delivered his speech. So I see Maverick live, standing sideways, and then he drops the whole thing and says, ‘Charles, how are you? All welcome. I’m Tom. ‘ And then I met Maverick / Tom at the same time, and it was pretty wild. It’s my first big memory, but I have a lot of good memories of working with him because he’s been great with me, he’s great with the cast, he’s relentlessly positive. He keeps your spirits up, makes you feel good about what you’re doing all the time, so it elevates the whole spirit of the movie.
Next up is Danny Ramirez, who played LT Mickey “Fanboy” Garcia, the OSM for Jay Ellis’ LT Reuben “Payback” Fitch. For his favorite Tom Cruise memory, Ramirez also picked a first interaction with the actor who was reportedly paid $ 12.5 million for that film, plus everything that came with their contract. However, this moment also served to remind Ramirez that Cruise is human, just like us, and someone who has supported everyone’s success in the world. Supreme production. As Ramirez explained:
There are many good memories, but what I’m going to share today is what broke that veil of… he’s already a superhuman, he’s really someone who’s a superhuman; is Tom Cruise. But the first time we met at an airbase, there was an assistant saying, “Tom is about to land, Tom is about to land in about 10-15 minutes.” And then everyone was saying, ‘Oh my God, Tom is about to land.’ And so we are all waiting in this corridor; he lands, nods to someone, and then this person, I don’t remember who he was, they go, and he’s about to come towards us, but he takes a sip of water. It works a little. There is only a small pool of water on the floor, and with his foot he wipes it, pretending that nothing has happened, then he comes over and greets her. I remember seeing him, and he knocked down the walls … he’s like us. And then from that point of construction, he’s not only like us, but he’s shown it and he’s one of the most compassionate and empathetic people. He wants you to be as successful as he wants to succeed himself, and he really shows it every day. So this is the general story.
Finally, we have Greg “Tarzan” Davis, who played LT Javy “Coyote” Machado and, like Danny Ramirez, went through some crazy flight training for Top Gun: Maverick. Davis fondly remembers listening to Tom Cruise talk about his experiences with veteran actors when he just started working. Here’s how Davis puts it:
My favorite moments on set with Tom were after filming, when we were done and we all hugged and he would tell us stories from the old days … of his growing experiences. I thought it was the coolest thing to hear because you read it in books, you see it on YouTube, but to hear it from the person who really lived it and met these icons and what it was like for him to work with great icons of his time, in our position, was really special, and I think it also broke down the walls.
Other actors who have spent time with Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick There were Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro (who particularly impressed the film’s aerial crew), Lewis Pullman, Bashir Salahuddin and Manny Jacinto. Joseph Kosinski, who previously worked with Cruise Forgottendirected the film, and Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer and Christopher McQuarrie, the latter of whom collaborated with Cruise at Mission Impossible film series for many years, everyone worked on the script. Furthermore Dissident critically acclaimed, it remains the only film released in 2022 to exceed $ 1 billion worldwide.
Together with its digital version, Top Gun: Maverick It is still showing in theaters and will be released in 4K, Blu-ray and DVD on November 1st. It has not yet been announced when the sequel will be available to stream with a Paramount + subscription, but we will be sharing this information. when it arrives.
